The Lookalike

I got my Titan Pocket last Thursday. Finally! Had been waiting for my turn since... August, I think. It wasn't always like that or felt that way, though. There was a time when I only glanced at Titan Pocket and dismissed it as a BlackBerry wannabe. But then I lost my Pixel 4 (which probably was a good riddance, since the battery life sucked). Left with no other alternative, I rediscovered my KEY2 and had a newfound respect that the phone had never let me down.

The last BlackBerry on earth, released back in 2018, was just the right fit. But one fine day, I noticed a line on the screen. It cracked! Probably because I left it basking under the sun when I exercised outdoor (oh yes, we'll get to this topic next week). I was heartbroken. This was my first screen crack since I started using mobile phones. As BlackBerry was simply nonexistent in 2021, I began looking at the next available phone with a physical keyboard: Titan Pocket.

Titan Pocket and KEY2. See the difference on the keyboard layout?

If you ever wondered why on earth I still needed a phone with a physical keyboard, I had told you that it felt right. If you wrote on a phone as often as I did, you'd want something that facilitated the creative process. The physical keyboard on BlackBerry did exactly that. Every click had this addictive feedback. The feeling and the sound of it got me going. It had been perfected throughout the years that it did what could be done on a physical keyboard. Not only it doubled as touchpad, but the autocorrect and words suggestion did what I wanted seamlessly in both English and Bahasa Indonesia.

Fuelled by such expectations, I was suddenly keen on having the all-new Titan Pocket. Many said it looked like BlackBerry Classic, but it somehow reminded me of Q10. Anyway, the obsession grew. It was quite a long wait, since those who funded Titan Pocket on Kickstarter would get it first. When September came, I could see Titan Pocket on Unihertz website, but couldn't purchase it for the longest time till September 22, 10am. That's when I got mine! However, there was no news when I would receive Order #1397. The e-mail only indicated that the shipping would start on October 9. Much to my surprise, I got it on September 30. But hey, no complaints here! The sooner, the better!

So I started configuring it. The original launcher was confusing, so I immediately switched it to BlackBerry Launcher. The BlackBerry Hub would soon follow and in no time, it looked like BlackBerry again, except it wasn't. As I looked at the tiny square screen (my first since BlackBerry Passport in 2015), I started typing. It felt different, but that strange, rubbery feeling was something that I would overcome. What actually stunned me the most was the layout. It slotted the space bar between V and M! This really messed up the muscle memory!

Okay, may be Unihertz made the changes to avoid being sued by BlackBerry, but still! Since BlackBerry came first, the physical keyboard had become the standard for the past one decade. And to make it worse, the function keys were all lined up on the first row. It really threw me off balance and yet that wasn't the end of it. I also noticed that the keyboard behaved differently on certain apps. It required further tweaking to get it right, but even now, the backspace is still not working on the title section of Blogger app. And when I said getting it right, what I meant was the setup that worked for me. And that configuration resulted in one row of permanent on-screen keyboard for some punctuation marks. You don't see this on a BlackBerry.

Backspace not working on the title section.
Permanent on-screen keyboard at the bottom.

I could go on and on about the keyboard, but then it dawned on me that the answer was simple: this wasn't a BlackBerry. In a world without BlackBerry, this was the next best thing and instead of grumbling that the standalone letter "i" didn't get capitalized automatically when I typed in English, I just had to live with it.

Once I get past that, the Titan Pocket seemed to be a pretty decent little device that got the job done. Yes, the software felt slightly buggy (couldn't upgrade Chrome when I tried, then it somehow got done) and I didn't even attempt to install Netflix on Titan Pocket as it was clearly not meant for watching movies. But there are good things, too. I like the smallest font size (a habit I picked up from one of my mentors) as it made things look neat. Battery life was fantastic, though it was probably the reason why Titan Pocket was heavy for a phone released in 2021. Other than that, the rest of the features such as NFC were yet to be tested on day-to-day activities.

Anyway, since you read until this paragraph, I'd let you in on a little secret: this blog post was written on Titan Pocket! Not bad, eh?

Kembaran BlackBerry

Titan Pocket yang saya pesan tiba Kamis lalu! Akhirnya!

Makin cepat, makin baik, haha!

Jadi saya pun mulai mengutak-atik Titan Pocket.
