Google Nest Wifi

I had always loved the Time Capsule. For almost a decade, I used it for both storage and Wi-Fi. It did well, until it became irrelevant one day. As a storage, the cloud suddenly seemed like a better option these days, therefore I shifted to Google One earlier this year.

Now that it was no longer storing data, the Time Capsule was solely used as AirPort. Pretty underused, I'd say. Just like any other single point Wi-Fi, I couldn't avoid having blind spots in my house. The signal was simply too weak in certain places and I could lose connection from time to time. I had to live with it then, but now I realized that I didn't have to!

That's when I looked for an alternative. I had been looking at Google Nest and suddenly there was a rather attractive discount. I could save up to SGD 85, so I grabbed a pair of them. One was called Nest Wifi router and the other was called Nest Wifi point. The former was where you plugged the internet connection cable to and the latter expanded the coverage. 

Google Nest Wifi used the mesh technology. The illustration below was probably the best example to show what it did. Not difficult to configure. You just had to download Google Home and it'd do the rest. What felt more troublesome was the effort to switch other devices to the new Wi-Fi. It was amusing to find that I had accumulated quite a fair bit of wireless devices throughout the years, especially those obscure ones such as Apple TV and printer!

Now, the result? I'd tell you this much: it felt extremely good to sit down and enjoy the smooth sailing movie streaming experience in my bedroom. I must have been subconsciously traumatized by the blind spots that even today, close to one month after I installed it, I still found it unbelievable. It was amazing how the connection was just so stable!

One last thing, the Nest Wifi point came with speakers. This brought in an entirely new digital experience: the interaction with Google Assistant. This was triggered by the fact that you knew the feature was there and you didn't want to waste it. Since then, we used it more often than before to check the weather, the news, set alarm and get her (my Google Assistant had a voice of a female) to play music just by saying, "Hey Google," and asked her to do stuff. My cheeky daughter even figured out that she could ask Google the multiplication questions she couldn't do!

Saya selalu menyukai Time Capsule yang merupakan produk Apple. Hampir 10 tahun lamanya saya menggunakan Time Capsule sebagai tempat penyimpanan data dan Wi-Fi. Selama itu pula memuaskan hasilnya, sampai hari dimana perangkat ini tidak lagi relevan. Sebagai tempat penyimpanan data, cloud terasa lebih masuk akal sekarang, jadi saya pun pindah ke Google One sejak awal tahun ini.

Semenjak itu, Time Capsule hanya digunakan sebagai AirPort sehingga berkurang drastis manfaatnya. Seperti halnya dengan Wi-Fi tunggal lainnya, saya pun memiliki masalah dengan titik-titik yang parah sinyalnya. Ada bagian rumah yang kurang terjangkau oleh sinyal dan koneksi saya sering putus dari waktu ke waktu. Saat menggunakan Time Capsule sebagai penyimpanan data, saya harus beradaptasi dengan kekurangan ini, tapi sekarang saya bisa melakukan sesuatu.

Saya lantas mencari solusinya. Saya sempat melirik Google Nest dan ketika ada diskon sebesar SGD 85, rasanya kian menarik untuk dicoba. Akhirnya saya beli satu pasang. Satu namanya Nest Wifi router dan yang satunya lagi disebut Nest Wifi point. Yang pertama adalah perangkat yang terhubung dengan kabel internet dan yang satunya lagi membantu menyebarkan sinyal dari tempat perangkat ini diletakkan.

Google Nest Wifi menggunakan teknologi mesh yang artinya beberapa perangkat yang berfungsi sebagai satu kesatuan. Ilustrasi di bawah ini adalah contoh yang bagus untuk menunjukkan cara kerjanya. Konfigurasinya pun tidak sulit. Anda hanya perlu mengunduh Google Home dan aplikasi ini akan menyelesaikan instalasinya. Yang lebih merepotkan itu justru menghubungkan perangkat lainnya dengan Wi-Fi baru. Saya sempat tertegun juga dengan jumlah perangkat nirkabel yang saya beli dalam beberapa tahun terakhir, terutama dengan piranti yang jarang saya utak-atik seperti Apple TV dan printer!

Nah, bagaimana hasilnya? Kesaksian saya adalah seperti ini: nikmat rasanya bisa duduk santai menonton Netflix dengan lancar di kamar. Saya pasti tanpa sadar sudah trauma dengan kondisi sinyal yang parah sehingga sampai hari ini pun, setelah hampir sebulan lamanya, saya masih merasa sulit untuk percaya betapa stabilnya sinyal di rumah sekarang. 

Satu hal terakhir, Nest Wifi point memiliki speakers. Hal ini memungkinkan terjadinya sebuah pengalaman digital yang sama sekali baru: interaksi dengan Google Assistant. Pengalaman ini dipicu oleh fakta bahwa saya tahu tentang keberadaan fitur yang tampak jelas di mata ini dan rasanya mubazir kalau tidak dipakai. Sejak itu, saya dan keluarga mulai menggunakannya untuk mengecek cuaca, berita, memasang alarm jam dan memutar musik hanya dengan bergumam, "Hey Google," dan memerintah Google untuk mengerjakan apa yang kita mau. Bahkan putri saya yang iseng pun kini menyadari bahwa dia bisa menanyakan jawaban dari soal perkalian yang tidak bisa ia kerjakan!
