The idea of this trip began early last month, when my mum and I bought Pontian noodles at the nearby mall. It dawned on me that despite the long history I had with the noodles, I never visited the place before. Oh yes, I had known Pontian noodles since 2009 as it was the staple food before the church gathering. The reason? It was cheap and decent. But unlike
Kuching and
kolo mee, I knew nothing about Pontian. So how about visiting the town?
I fancied the idea, especially because it would be a short trip that I could do over the weekend. I thought of getting some friends who stayed in Singapore to join. Surianto was game,
Endrico threw in the date 17 Aug. But much to my surprise, even friends from overseas such as Alvin and Susan could make it. Eventually, there were eight of us, just nice for two cars should we need to call Grab.

We started early on the day of departure. Bus 168 taken by Surianto passed us by when we were approaching the bus stop, so we did our best to catch up by taking bus 969 to go to Khatib and continued our journey to Kranji by MRT. From there, we headed to Woodlands Checkpoint. By the time we crossed the bridge to Malaysia, Andiyanto and his wife Flo already reached Restoran Kin Hua, our meeting point that was suggested by Endrico.
All things considered, the journey was smooth and we were the second party that made it there. By the time we finished our breakfast, Susan and Taty arrived. We were there for a while more, waiting for them to grab a bite. Once done, we called Grab and headed to Larkin Sentral.

Rushing for the bus! |
The one and only time I was at this bus interchange was back in March 2009, when I visited
Malacca for the first time ever. Larkin Sentral looked much different from what I remembered. Not much time to waste, though. After rushing Endrico, Surianto, Taty and Alvin, we boarded the bus to Pontian!
Pontian Kechil was about an hour and 30 minutes away from Larkin. It seemed like the town's mascot was pineapple, because it was ubiquitous! We went to Heng Heng Original Tomato Wanton Mee and ordered our meal. The first portion I had was kind of small, so Alvin and I shared another bowl, this time the soy sauce flavors. It was all right.

After lunch, we went to Lorong Cendol for something fresh, then we headed to the beach. Pontian was so quiet that we had to decide what to do next after the beach. I had Kukup in mind, thinking that we could continue to Tanjung Balai right after that, but Susan wanted to buy mooncake, so we returned to Johor Bahru and went to Mid Valley.
The mall was crowded. We split to do our own stuff and gathered again at 5 PM. Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal was not very far from Mid Valley, so we tried our luck, just in case we could catch the last ferry to
Batam. It'd be wild if we traveled three countries in one day, but it wasn't meant to be. The traffic jam was so bad that by the time we got there, the last ferry had departed.

We walked towards Sin Du Huat Seafood Restaurant for dinner. After ordering from the menu, Endrico suggested that we should book Airbnb instead. I was never a fan of Airbnb, so I logged into the app and let him make a decision for us, then I resumed dining. We ordered a lot of food, but Susan was brilliant. By scooping the food for us, she emptied the plates for us to finish.
And the booking done by Endrico turned out to be a great deal! The apartment he got us, D'Esplanade Residence, was unbelievably spacious that it could fit in 16 adults! It was also next to KSL City Mall. Not that it was a great mall, but at least we could buy stuff there. We also crossed the street for durians. To be precise, we as in I watched them eating the smelly fruits.
|
And they started choosing durians! |
While we were going out, some of us stayed back for massage and chiropractic
done by Alvin. Taty was the last customer for the night and Susan joked that while in Malaysia, the charges would be in ringgit. So there we were in the living room, talking and reminiscing. That's the great part of
traveling with people that had known you easily for 30 years.
The next morning, we explored the KSL area. We found seats at Couple Kopitiam, so we had our breakfast there. We checked out before 12 PM and headed to City Square for one last bit of JB before returning to Singapore. While the rest went shopping, I was on
my usual mission. I joined them afterwards. We hung out quite a while at Old Town White Coffee and we ended the trip with late lunch at Dragon-I.

Come to think of it, this is probably the first time since I came to Singapore that I really explored JB. I never knew much about the city, as I often passed it by and headed to another destinations instead. On top of that, for a
weekend getaway, I'd rather go to Batam. So does it mean I like JB now? I'm afraid the answer is no. It's just too close to Singapore to be liked, haha.
Epilogue: I'd say the trip really ended when Alvin and I sat down and ate Mee Pontian at the mall nearby my house. I wanted to compare it with the one we tasted during the trip. I liked the Singapore version, but much to my surprise, Alvin felt the original version was better. So which one is better? I guess I'll never find out now!

Perjalanan Ke Pontian
Endrico pun menentukan tanggal 17 Agustus.

check out.

liburan singkat akhir pekan.
