The Game Changer

Sometimes all it took was the most trivial thing to remind you that life had come a long way. It was one fine morning, I was on my way to the bus stop. Just like most of us these days, I was busy doomscrolling. Then I saw something that made me wonder why Akira Toriyama created Vegeta, the Prince of Saiyans from Dragon Ball Z, as a physically short character. Just like that, I fired the question on Perplexity, my go-to AI.

It was the aftermath that got me thinking. It was that easy to get my answer. AI was really a game-changer, eh? Looking back, since the dawn of the internet, dating all the way back to 1998 for me, I've been incredibly fortunate to witness firsthand and experience these game-changing moments.

I remember the time I discovered Amazon. When I first saw it in 1999, I was convinced that this was the future of shopping. I was so impressed by the books and CD collections that I applied for my first credit card. Didn't work out well for me at that time, though. But fast forward to years later, online shopping is a norm. So are contactless and QR code payments.

Another thing that kept evolving was the chat app. From just a tool to have some fun and get a date on Saturday night, it was revolutionized by BBM a decade later. Today, WhatsApp is an integral part of my life when it comes to chatting and calling. Gone are the days when you had to buy international calling cards. I can just call my mum in Pontianak anytime now. 

Then there are various ride-hailing apps. I always think of it as something you didn't know you needed, but there's no turning back once you knew it. The idea was so genius and sneaky at the same time that it changed the way of life quietly. For the better. Grab, Uber, and many more are parts of my life now. No more waiting in uncertainty. You either get your ride or you don't.

The next one I'm going to tell you may not be too significant for some, but I really love having my data on the go. Prior to this, I had been a fan of Apple's Time Capsule. I didn't understand why Apple stopped refreshing the product. Only when I shifted my data to the cloud did I realize why. If information is power, it was like having power at the palm of your hands. The cloud was practical, no more hardware to maintain, and proven to be useful time and again.

And the last was of course AI. I said this before and I'll say it again. For the longest time, the word google was a verb. But it immediately became a thing of the past the moment I tried AI. It was like having someone to read and summarize the answer you need. And it could even do more than that. The possibilities are endless. From here onwards, life as we know it won't be the same anymore.

For the first 18 years of my life in Pontianak, I went through an era before the internet. Yes, to a certain extent, life in a small town could do without some of the things I mentioned above. One could even say, in a rather ignorant manner, that life was less complicated without all this. 

But the technology I described above is not only a game-changer, but also inevitable. You are either left behind, living in a borrowed time, or you actually embrace it. The game changer is here to stay and, for the fact that it can be integrated seamlessly, I don't think it should be feared. If anything, it should be learnt, so that our life quality can be improved. 

The five that I mentioned above.

Terobosan

Hidup ini lucu. Terkadang justru hal remeh yang terbersit di benak yang mengingatkan anda kembali, betapa hidup ini sudah jauh berubah. Cerita kali ini bermula di suatu pagi, saat saya berjalan ke halte bis dan sibuk menggulirkan bacaan di Facebook. Lantas saya melihat sesuatu yang membuat saya penasaran, kenapa Akira Toriyama menciptakan Vegeta, sang Pangeran Saiyan dari Dragon Ball Z, sebagai karakter yang pendek secara fisik. Berbekal pertanyaan tersebut, saya lantas cari tahu di Perplexity, AI andalan saya. 

Saya dapat jawabannya, tapi apa yang saya lakukan itu lalu membuat saya berpikir. Betaap mudahnya mencari jawaban di masa kini. AI memang sebuah terobosan handal. Bila saya lihat kembali, sejak saya mengenal internet di tahun 1998, saya sudah menyaksikan dan mengalami langsung beberapa terobosan yang mengubah hidup kita. 

Saya ingat saat pertama kali saya menemukan Amazon. Di tahun 1999, saya percaya bahwa inilah masa depan cara berbelanja. Saya sangat terperangah dengan lengkapnya koleksi buku dan CD musik di Amazon, sampai-sampai saya tergerak untuk memohon kartu kredit. Akan tetapi semuanya tidak selancar yang saya bayangkan. Bertahun-tahun kemudian, berbelanja di internet sudah lumrah. Demikian pula halnya dengan pembayaran nirsentuh dan kode QR. Memang terbukti.

Hal lain yang senantiasa berubah adalah aplikasi chat. Dari sekedar alat untuk berkencan di malam Minggu, fungsinya berubah drastis dengan kemunculan BBM yang revolusioner. Hari ini WhatsApp adalah aplikasi utama saya dalam menghubungi dan menelepon. Kini saya tak lagi perlu membeli kartu telepon internasional. Saya bisa menelepon ibu saya setiap saat.  

Kemudian ada pula aplikasi untuk jasa antar mobil. Saya selalu merasa bahwa ini adalah sesuatu yang tanpa sadar selalu dibutuhkan. Ide ini begitu jenius dan mengubah pola hidup secara senyap. Dan hidup pun menjadi lebih baik dan praktis. Sekarang Grab, Uber dan beberapa aplikasi lainnya senantiasa tersedia di Google Pixel saya. Kini tak ada lagi penantian tanpa kepastian. Yang ada cuma mendapatkan tumpangan atau tidak. 

Selanjutnya, yang akan saya sampaikan berikut ini mungkin tidak begitu signifikan bagi sebagian pembaca, tapi saya suka dengan data pribadi yang selalu terjangkau oleh saya. Sebelumnya, saya adalah penggemar Time Capsule dari Apple. Saya heran ketika Apple menghentikan produk ini. Ketika saya pindahkan data ke cloud, barulah saya mengerti kenapa. Jika informasi adalah kekuatan, analoginya adalah seperti menggenggam kekuatan dalam telapak tangan. Cloud begitu praktis, tak lagi perlu bagi saya untuk memperbaharui perangkat, dan sudah terbukti berguna pula di aneka kesempatan. 

Dan yang terakhir tentu saja adalah AI. Saya sudah pernah mengatakan ini, dan saya akan ulang lagi. Selama bertahun-tahun, kata “google” sudah menjadi sebuah kata kerja. Namun, semua itu langsung terasa usang setelah saya mencoba AI. Rasanya seperti memiliki seseorang yang membaca dan merangkumkan jawaban yang kita butuhkan. Bahkan, AI bisa melakukan lebih dari itu. Kemungkinannya tak terbatas. Mulai sekarang, hidup kita tidak akan pernah sama lagi.

Selama 18 tahun pertama hidup saya di Pontianak, saya melewati masa sebelum adanya internet. Ya, sampai batas tertentu, kehidupan di kota kecil bisa berjalan tanpa beberapa hal yang saya sebutkan di atas. Bahkan, seseorang bisa saja berkata dengan naif bahwa hidup terasa lebih sederhana tanpa semua ini.

Namun teknologi yang saya jelaskan di atas bukan hanya mengubah hidup kita, tetapi juga tidak dapat dihindari. Kita hanya punya pilihan-pilihan berikut ini: ketinggalan zaman, tetap pasif menanti semua itu terjadi, atau menerima perubahan ini sepenuhnya. Perubahan besar ini akan terus ada, dan karena dapat diintegrasikan dengan begitu mulus, saya rasa tidak ada alasan untuk takut. Justru sebaliknya, teknologi ini sebaiknya diterima dan dipelajari agar kualitas hidup kita menjadi lebih baik lagi.

The Cashless Society

I have always been a fan of the cashless payment mode. I'm so fond of it that one of my favorite moves is waving a credit card to settle the payment. The freedom of it, so liberating! Carrying so much cash, especially when traveling, is never my thing. 

And the world seems to agree with this, hence the QR code payment. I was too irritated to realize it last year, but looking back, the QRIS at Whoosh's Tegalluar Station outside the city of Bandung was a telltale sign. At that time, I was simply pissed off that the stall didn't accept either cash or credit card in such a godforsaken place!

The awakening time happened in China. During our visit, it was safe to say that cash was overrated. Everything could be paid using Alipay or WeChat Pay. It was crazily practical and efficient. That's when I started paying attention to this QR payment. 

Then came the Vientiane trip a few months ago. The Loca Pay inside Loca app was convenient. After that, right before my trip to Jakarta, I saw this app called Dana appearing on my Facebook. I downloaded it and not only it was useful, but it also saved me from the hassles that might have occurred during the trip if I hadn't had the app. By the time I was going for another trip to JB, I had TNG eWallet ready on my phone. 

Just like I said earlier, I don't like carrying cash. In a situation where I can't use my card, all these QR payment apps help me to achieve what I want. As my credit card is linked to the app, the logic remains the same to me. I'm still paying with my card, not cash. It allows me to use my card, albeit by proxy, but that is just fine. 

It's a different time these days, really. Gone are the days when you had to carry a lot of cash and this change suits me well. Yes, sometimes there'll be extra charges on top of the actual amount, but if compared with paying in cash, that's definitely the price I'm willing to pay.

Dunia Non-Tunai

Saya selalu menggemari pembayaran non-tunai, sampai-sampai salah satu gerakan favorit saya adalah kibas-kibas kartu kredit. Begitu fleksibel dan bebas rasanya. Kalau bawa banyak uang kontan, terutama di saat berlibur, rasanya tidak praktis.

Dan dunia sepertinya sepakat dengan pola pembayaran ini, makanya pembayaran dengan kode QR bermunculan. Saya terlalu jengkel untuk menyadarinya tahun lalu, namun bila saya lihat kembali, QRIS di Stasiun Tegalluar khusus Whoosh yang berada di luar kota Bandung adalah pertanda. Di kala itu, saya gusar karena kedai yang saya hampiri tidak menerima pembayaran kontan dan kartu kredit di tempat terpencil seperti ini! 

Pandangan saya terbuka saat berada di Cina. Selama kunjungan kita di sana, boleh dikatakan uang kontan sebenarnya tidak diperlukan. Semua bisa dibayar dengan Alipay atau WeChat Pay. Benar-benar luar biasa efisien! Dari sinilah saya mulai mengamati pembayaran berdasarkan kode QR. 

Lantas tiba liburan ke Vientiane di pertengahan tahun ini. Loca Pay di dalam aplikasi Loca membuat segalanya terasa gampang. Setelah itu, sebelum saya ke Jakarta, aplikasi Dana muncul di Facebook saya. Saya pun unduh dan terbukti berguna. Saya terlepas dari segala kesulitan yang pasti harus saya hadapi kalau saja saya tidak memiliki Dana. Selanjutnya, sebelum saya ke Johor Bahru, saya sudah menyiapkan TNG eWallet di telepon genggam saya. 

Seperti yang saya ungkapkan sebelumnya, saya tidak suka membawa uang tunai. Dalam situasi di mana saya tidak bisa menggunakan kartu kredit, aplikasi pembayaran QR ini tetap membuat saya mencapai apa yang saya inginkan. Karena kartu kredit saya sudah terdaftar di aplikasi, saya tetap membayar menggunakan kartu dan bukan tunai. 

Zaman sudah berubah. Kita tak perlu lagi membawa banyak uang tunai dan perubahan ini cocok untuk saya. Ya, terkadang memang ada biaya tambahan, tapi bila dibandingkan dengan pembayaran tunai, maka biaya tambahan tersebut adalah harga yang siap saya bayar dengan senang hati. 

MVNO

MVNO... Never heard of it? So did I! This story started after my wife came back from her birthday party. She simply said that the eight SIM-only plan was cheaper. I had no idea what she was talking about. My first time hearing it. But like any good husbands that tried avoiding further nagging from the wife, I did my due diligence. 

So I fired up Perplexity, my trusted AI, and started researching. That's when I first discovered the plethora of MVNO providers. But first thing first, the key of MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) is the word virtual, which means they are telcos without physical network infrastructure. That's why the cost is the cheaper, but that also means they are the second class citizens in the telco world. Think of them as the stripped down version. 

I'd been loyal to Starhub for so long that all these MVNOs such as eight, Vivifi, Gomo, etc. were below my radar. But I like traveling, and throughout my journey for the past 25 years, I have seen how the technology has evolved in terms of internet use. Things had changed drastically from portable Wi-Fi to eSIM. Now this! The convergence! For the first time ever, I noticed that the international roaming for selected countries, such as TH, MY and ID were included in the package deal. 

But while the low price and big data plan is attractive, the question now is its reliability as a whole. So I got one data-only Circles.Life just to test it out. It's been all right, the signal has been quite steady even when I am inside the MRT. Support-wise, it was a bit odd to have it available on Facebook Messenger, but it worked well for me! However, the plan I subscribed to didn't work outside Singapore. 

Back to eight, I switched and ported my daughter's StarHub number to the MVNO provider. It was easy to set up, though I still saw her temporary number as the SMS sender even a week after the successful port-in (it was eventually fixed). She was unhappy, complaining that the internet connection was choppy. Not sure if it was true, but the 4G was totally gone at least once right after the initial setup. When I borrowed the SIM card for a day trip to JB, I'd say the signal was pretty reliable. 

As for me, I had been using Star Plan. It worked well, but I disliked the idea of not having a proper contact number for what I'd consider as a premium MNO service these days. I mean, it didn't make sense to pay so much when its chat support is worse than Circles.Life. So one fine day, while taking the train to the office, I switched to M1. Similar service, still MNO, but monthly recurring cost was reduced from SGD 27.5 to SGD 11.5. Bye, StarHub! It had been a good 15 years or so!

MVNO... Belum pernah dengar? Sama juga halnya dengan saya! Cerita ini bermula setelah istri saya pulang dari pesta ulang tahunnya. Dia dengan santai berujar kalau paket SIM-only dari eight itu lebih murah. Saya tidak tahu apa yang ia bicarakan. Baru kali ini saya dengar yang namanya eight. Namun sebagai suami yang baik dan senantiasa berusaha menghindari ocehan lebih lanjut dari istrinya, saya pun lakukan riset.

Saya aktifkan Perplexity, AI andalan saya, lalu mulai mencari informasi. Dari situlah saya pertama kali tahu tentang banyaknya penyedia MVNO. Tapi hal pertama yang penting untuk dipahami dari MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) adalah kata virtual, artinya mereka ini adalah operator tanpa infrastruktur jaringan fisik. Karena inilah biayanya lebih murah, tapi juga berarti mereka ini seperti “warga kelas dua” di dunia telko. Bisa dibilang versi sederhana dari operator asli.

Saya sudah begitu lama setia dengan StarHub sampai semua MVNO seperti eight, Vivifi, Gomo, dan lain-lain benar-benar tidak masuk radar saya. Tapi saya suka berlibur, dan selama 25 tahun terakhir saya melihat sendiri bagaimana teknologi internet berkembang. Dulu orang pakai portable Wi-Fi, lalu beralih ke eSIM. Dan sekarang ini! Sebuah titik temu! Untuk pertama kalinya saya perhatikan roaming internasional untuk negara tertentu, seperti Thailand, Malaysia, dan Indonesia, sudah termasuk dalam paket.

Tapi meskipun harga murah dan kuota besar itu menarik, kuncinya sekarang tentu saja adalah soal keandalan secara keseluruhan. Jadi saya coba ambil paket data-only dari Circles.Life untuk uji coba. Lumayan, sinyal cukup stabil bahkan di kala saya berada di dalam MRT. Dari sisi pelayanan, agak aneh juga karena harus lewat Facebook Messenger, tapi buat saya cukup efektif! Sayangnya, paket yang saya ambil tidak bisa digunakan di luar Singapura.

Kembali ke eight, saya akhirnya pindahkan nomor StarHub anak saya ke penyedia MVNO itu. Prosesnya mudah, tapi seminggu setelah pemindahan nomor berhasil, nomor sementara anak saya masih muncul sebagai pengirim SMS (problem ini akhirnya beres juga). Dia kurang senang, katanya koneksi internet suka putus-putus. Entah benar atau tidak, tapi 4G sempat benar-benar hilang tak lama setelah saya aktifkan. Tapi waktu saya pinjam kartu SIM-nya untuk perjalanan sehari ke JB, menurut saya sinyalnya lumayan stabil.

Kalau saya sendiri, sebelumnya saya pakai Star Plan. Selama ini berjalan lancar, tapi saya kurang suka dengan konsep layanan MNO premium yang bahkan tidak menyediakan nomor kontak yang jelas. Maksud saya, untuk apa bayar lebih kalau pelayanan via chat-nya malah lebih buruk daripada Circles.Life? Jadi suatu hari, saat naik kereta ke kantor, saya putuskan pindah ke M1. Layanannya mirip, masih MNO, tapi biaya bulanan turun dari SGD 27,5 jadi SGD 11,5. Selamat tinggal, StarHub! Terima kasih untuk kebersamaan selama 15 tahun terakhir!

The Doomscrolling

And we thought binge-watching on Netflix was bad! Like many others, I've also got my own addictions to battle. For example, I am still hooked by crackberry, even long after BBM ended (it was simply replaced by WhatsApp). It was a struggle to sit down and really make a conversation with a person in front of you, just like what I did with my wife when we had a dinner. Oh yes, dinner and drink were probably the few times I could totally put my phone down on the table.

Now, on top of the ongoing crackberry addiction, I began realizing a new pattern that I developed lately. Yes, scrolling down the newsfeed on Facebook was already part of my lifestyle for as long as I could remember. However, I couldn't help noticing that recently, I spent a lot of times watching those short videos on Facebook.

I just had to click one, let's say a snippet of Two and a Half Men, then from that point onwards, anything else that caught my attention would continue to appear. It could be a few minutes of stand-up comedy, then scenes of crocodiles in action (yeah, I am somehow fascinated by how unpredictable crocodiles are), a quick laugh with Everybody Loves Raymond, etc. And I'd keep scrolling down until I reached office.

The biggest difference between the two behaviours described above is this: I could still stop scrolling down the newsfeed on Facebook. But those videos, it was as if there was this voice whispering to me, may be one more? By the time I reached Downtown Station, what felt like a harmless suggestion had turned out to be more than one video for sure. 

I remember reading a specific term about this before. When I cross-checked this on Perplexity AI, there were many names for the syndrome: infinite scroll, zombie scrolling and doomscrolling. They all basically meant the same thing: the unconscious act of scrolling through social media or other content, typically without a clear goal or endpoint.

Kinda spooky, though. I'm not a TikTok user, but I reckon it could be worse for them. Time for digital detox, perhaps? Maybe it's time to try out the Minimal Phone? Or probably I should wait a bit for the BlackBerry Classic revival in the form of Zinwa Q25? We shall see!

Kecanduan Digital

Dan kita dulu menyangka bahwa yang namanya binge-watching di Netflix itu tidak baik! Tak berbeda dengan orang lain, saya pun memiliki masalah kecanduan yang perlu saya atasi. Sebagai contoh, sampai hari ini saya masih terbelenggu crackberry, lama setelah BBM tamat (dan kini tergantikan dengan WhatsApp). Perlu perjuangan untuk bisa duduk dan benar-benar berbincang dengan lawan bicara, seperti halnya yang saya lakukan dengan istri saat kita makan malam di luar. Oh ya, acara makan dan minum adalah sekali-kalinya saya bisa mengabaikan telepon saya di meja. 

Kecanduan Crackberry...

Selain masalah ketergantungan crackberry, saya menyadari bahwa ada pola baru yang mulai saya jalani tanpa sadar. Membaca berita di Facebook adalah bagian dari hidup sejak penghujung dekade pertama di abad 21. Akan tetapi menghabiskan waktu menonton video singkat di Facebook adalah perihal baru yang tidak biasa. 

Saya cukup menekan satu, misalnya cuplikan Two and a Half Men, lalu apa saja yang menarik perhatian saya akan terus bermunculan, mulai dari beberapa menit komedi, lalu video tentang buaya (ya, entah kenapa saya selalu tertarik dengan tindak-tanduk buaya yang tidak bisa diprediksi), tawa singkat bersama Everybody Loves Raymond dan lain-lain. Saya akan terus membuka video berikutnya sampai saya tiba di kantor.

Perbedaan paling mendasar dari dua prilaku ini adalah kontrol diri. Untuk berita Facebook, saya masih bisa berhenti. Tapi untuk video-video singkat ini, sepertinya ada suara yang berbisik, tak apa-apa, satu video lagi saja. Dan di saat saya tiba di Stasiun Downtown, saran bawah sadar itu membuat saya menghabiskan waktu melihat entah berapa banyak video selama perjalanan ke kantor. 

Saya ingat bahwa saya pernah membaca tentang hal ini sebelumnya. Ketika saya cari lagi menggunakan Perplexity AI, sindrom ini muncul dalam berbagai nama: gulir tanpa akhir, gulir zombi dan gulir hingga kiamat. Semua ini memiliki definisi yang kurang-lebih sama: perbuatan menggulir ke bawah tanpa sadar untuk melihat konten media sosial yang tidak jelas tujuannya dan tidak memiliki akhir. 

Agak seram juga nama dan penjabarannya. Saya bukan pengguna Tiktok, tapi saya jadi membayangkan, mungkin lebih parah lagi bagi mereka. Apa sudah waktunya untuk detoksifikasi digital? Ganti ke Minimal Phone? Atau mungkin tunggu sampai bulan depan untuk menantikan kembalinya BlackBerry Classic dalam bentuk Zinwa Q25? Hmm, mari kita lihat bersama-sama...

AI

I believe the best technology design is the one you don't know you need, until you use it and you know there's no turning back anymore. Grab and Amazon were good examples. They revolutionized the way we called the cab and shopped.

On a more personal note, cloud as data storage as well as the combination of Google Home and YouTube Music were the game changers for me. I was a fan of Apple's Time Capsule until it became too much of a hassle due to the need for tech refresh. That's when I switched to the cloud. The feeling of having your data accessible all the time is irreplaceable. Same goes for having your music play at the command of your voice anywhere at home. It couldn't get more practical than this!

The main three.

AI had a similar effect described above. For the longest time, the word google had become a verb on a sentence we used when we wanted to search for something on the internet. "Just google it," that's how we normally said it. But for the first time in forever, there was a better alternative. Googling it just wouldn't cut it anymore.

While a lot can be done using AI, the particular feature I was zooming in recently was the search function. I touched Copilot a bit for office matter, since it came with Microsoft O365. Gemini appeared here and there on my phone because I'm using Pixel 8. Meta was used for fun on WhatsApp, though result wasn't that good. For example, Meta AI couldn't really tell how many r were there in the word strawberry, haha.

The other three that I explored were Deepseek, ChatGPT and Perplexity. The first was free, the last two were paid version. Deepseek's reply could be quite comprehensive, but I observed that the data (or knowledge) was only up until July 2024. It could hang after responding to too many questions and it wouldn't answer if the question was about Chairman Mao. 

ChatGPT was more interesting. But more often than not, it replied based on its database instead of searching for the latest update. Mistakes similar to Meta AI also happened on ChatGPT. I knew this because it tried to bluff me about the Beatles and Michael Jackson. Only when I shared the proof then it would learn about it. This is called machine learning. By the way, the proof was in the form of a link of an article. Of the three, only ChatGPT is capable of reading the links the users provided.

Questioning ChatGPT!

For updated info and accuracy, I'd go for Perplexity. Unlike ChatGPT that responded to you immediately, Perplexity would search for the answers from online sources before summarizing it for you. Response was slower due to this, but answer was more convincing. And the result from paid version was more in-depth as compared with the free version. 

And I said earlier about a better alternative and no turning back. You see, if we googled stuff, it came back with many results and we had to go through them. But AI took it to another level. It searched, ran through the results and summarized it based on what we asked. This is the difference and it's definitely much more useful. You didn't always get you want by googling it, but with AI, you got exactly what you queried. The precision was uncanny... 

PS: in our group chat, we also had what we called Chat Bot with AI (Artificial Idiocy) as a bonus. Data was based on what our Mr. Know-it-all had said since October 2017. Operated manually by Eday, the replies were amusing and the topics it covered were surprisingly wide. The Chat Bot was relevant to whatever that we asked!

Saya percaya rancangan teknologi terbaik adalah teknologi yang tanpa sadar anda butuhkan dan begitu dicoba, langsung mengubah pola hidup anda. Grab dan Amazon adalah contoh yang bagus. Kehadiran dua teknologi ini mengubah cara kita memanggil taksi dan membeli sesuatu. 

Secara pribadi, yang berkesan bagi saya adalah cloud sebagai tempat penyimpanan data dan juga kombinasi Google Home dan YouTube Music. Saya adalah penggemar produk Apple yang bernama Time Capsule, namun merasa risih dengan proses pembaharuan perangkat keras. Di saat itulah saya pindah ke cloud. Praktisnya pun terasa, sebab kini data saya senantiasa bisa diakses, tak masalah di mana pun saya berada. Sama halnya pula dengan musik yang bisa melantun di segala penjuru rumah hanya dengan perintah saya. 

Tiga aplikasi AI.

AI memiliki efek serupa seperti yang dijabarkan di atas. Kata google sudah sejak lama menjadi kata kerja dalam kalimat yang kita pakai saat kita ingin mencari sesuatu di internet. Biasanya kita ucapkan dengan logat seperti ini, "google aja lagi." Tapi untuk pertama kalinya dalam dua dekade terakhir ini, ada alternatif yang lebih baik. Google saja sudah tidak cukup lagi. 

Banyak hal yang bisa dilakukan dengan AI, namun yang hendak saya bahas di sini adalah kemampuan untuk mencari sesuatu. Karena urusan kantor, saya sempat coba Copilot yang sudah sepaket dengan Microsoft O365. Gemini sering muncul di sana-sini karena saya menggunakan telepon Pixel 8. Meta pun kadang dipakai untuk iseng di WhatsApp, meski hasilnya kurang bagus. Sebagai contoh, Meta AI tidak tahu ada berapa huruf r dalam kata strawberry, haha.

Menguji Meta AI.

Tiga aplikasi lain yang saya jajal adalah Deepseek, ChatGPT dan Perplexity. Deepseek gratis, sedangkan yang dua lagi adalah versi langganan. Jawaban Deepseek tergolong detil, tapi data (atau pengetahuannya) cuma sebatas Juli 2024. Deepseek bisa mogok bila ditanya terus-menerus. Selain itu, bila pertanyaannya berkaitan dengan Mao Zedong, maka Deepseek akan memilih bungkam. 

ChatGPT lebih menarik, namun jawabannya sering mengacu pada database dan bukannya jawaban terkini. Kesalahan serupa yang terjadi pada Meta AI juga terlihat di ChatGPT. Saya menyadari hal ini karena informasinya yang keliru tentang the Beatles dan Michael Jackson. Ketika saya bagikan bukti, barulah AI ini tahu kesalahannya. Ini yang namanya pembelajaran mesin. Oh ya, bukti yang saya berikan berbentuk link dari artikel tentang topik yang sedang dibahas. Dari tiga aplikasi ini, hanya ChatGPT yang bisa membaca link yang diberikan oleh pengguna.

Mempertanyakan ChatGPT!

Untuk informasi yang terkini dan akurat, saya menggunakan Perplexity. Berbeda dengan ChatGPT yang langsung merespon pertanyaan, Perplexity akan mencari jawaban dari berbagai sumber di internet dulu, baru dirangkum untuk pengguna. Oleh karena itu, responnya lebih lambat, tapi jawabannya lebih tepat. Dan versi langganan lebih rinci dari versi gratis. 

Saya katakan sebelumnya tentang alternatif yang lebih baik dan mengubah pola hidup. Jika dibandingkan, hasil dari Google adalah aneka kemungkinan yang perlu anda telusuri satu per satu. Inilah bedanya kalau menggunakan AI. Kecerdasan buatan ini mencari, membaca jawaban dari berbagai sumber, lalu merangkum semuanya sesuai dengan pertanyaan kita. Di sinilah letak perbedaannya dan tentunya lebih bermanfaat. Kalau cuma sekedar google, kita tidak langsung dapatkan apa yang kita mau. Tapi dengan AI, jawabannya sesuai dengan apa yang kita tanyakan. Keakuratannya sungguh mencengangkan...

PS: di grup SMA kita, kita juga memiliki Chat Bot plus AI (Artificial Idiocy alias Kebodohan Buatan) sebagai bonus. Data berdasarkan apa yang diucapkan oleh pria yang suka melibatkan diri dalam berbagai hal sejak Oktober 2017. Sistem yang diproses secara manual oleh Eday ini kocak jawabannya, tapi cakupan topiknya sungguh luas nian! Chat Bot ini selalu bisa menjawab apa yang ingin kita tanyakan! 

Tetralingo

This story began in July 2024, when I was waiting for my muifan. When I was browsing the news on my phone, I suddenly saw the ad of Duocards (the wooly mammoth was eye-catching). As I always had an interest in language learning, it piqued my curiosity. I checked with my friends on the group chat to see if anyone had tried learning language via app. Turned out that Surianto had already been using Duolingo, so I tested it out, too.

Duolingo felt natural whereas Duocards required much effort to understand what it was all about. I quickly dropped the latter and continued with Duolingo. As I worked at a Chinese company, it was a common sense to pick up Chinese. I also resumed studying French. Always love the language as it sounded sexy. 

The two accounts.

Because I started Duolingo on iPad using my Apple ID, I realized that I wouldn't be able to use it on my Google Pixel. This is how I ended up with two accounts. As I proceeded with my second account, I chose another two languages, this time Dutch and Russian. In total, I learnt four languages concurrently.

But how does learning four languages at one go feel like? The answer is, surprisingly, pretty seamless. First of all, thanks to the learning streaks, we see the words everyday. So often that they gradually grew on you. I was also amazed to discover how the brain could actually adjust to what I was learning. For example, doing one Chinese lesson and then switching to French immediately after that was actually not a problem.

What could be challenging was the human nature to embrace the new language with what we already knew. In this case, my benchmark was English. I'd say something like, "I eat at the French restaurant," but in French, it became, "je mange au restaurant français." So français came after the word restaurant. The grammar could be confusing at times. 

As I picked up four languages at once, I noticed that the lessons created for each language could be quite different. French language has the most advanced features such as stories and games catered for listening and speaking skills. It even had a bit of pointers for grammar. But the other three, especially Dutch, had almost none, so you had to figure it out yourself.

About the languages, I am familiar with Chinese and I am able to read pinyin, so it is more of a refresher course for daily practice and also for knowledge expansion. 

French is my real love and it is fun learning it. Some parts, like how to differentiate le and la, have no proper explanation and you just have to memorize them. 

The word rekening is also used in Bahasa Indonesia.

Dutch is more for a historical reason, since Bahasa Indonesia took a lot of words from the Dutch language. As a matter of fact, the way we read the words is quite similar with Bahasa. But as I progress, I find that the grammar was very challenging! 

As for Russian, it was almost like encrypted alphabets. Every sentence was a riddle, but the structure somehow felt rudimentary. Instead of spelling them out word by word, the sentence could be very short instead. For instance, rather than saying, "Mark is a politician," you can say it like this in Russian: Марк — политик.

Now, after 149 days of learning, what's the result? Let's try out. Here goes nothing:

我是姓李. 我叫玉軒. 我每天学习汉语. 我会说, 也会听一点中文, 但死不会读. 可是我会懂拼音. 我用拼音慢慢写, 慢慢读. 还可以吧! 现在最总要的是跟你们说话!

2024 year in review.

Tetralingo

Cerita kali ini dimulai di bulan Juli 2024, sewaktu saya menanti muifan di That Coffee Place pada saat makan malam. Selagi melihat-lihat berita di telepon genggam saya, tiba-tiba tampak iklan Duocards (saya suka gajah purba yang menjadi logonya). Karena saya ada ketertarikan dengan belajar bahasa, saya jadi ingin mencari tahu lebih lanjut di grup SMA. Ternyata Surianto sudah mulai belajar menggunakan Duolingo, jadi saya pun ikut mencoba. 

Duolingo terasa lebih alami sementara Duocards memerlukan banyak upaya untuk memahami cara penggunaannya. Saya lantas berhenti menjajaki Duocards dan lanjut dengan Duolingo. Karena saya bekerja di perusahaan Cina, maka saya pun memilih pelajaran Mandarin. Selain itu saya juga meneruskan pelajaran Perancis. Saya suka bahasanya yang terdengar seksi.

Dua akun saya.

Karena saya memulai Duolingo di iPad menggunakan Apple ID, saya lantas menyadari bahwa saya tidak akan bisa lanjut berlatih dengan Google Pixel. Inilah sebabnya kenapa saya memiliki dua akun. Di akun kedua, saya memilih bahasa Belanda dan Rusia. Secara keseluruhan, saya belajar empat bahasa secara bersamaan. 

Namun bagaimana kesannya belajar empat bahasa sekaligus? Jawabannya, menurut saya, cukup lancar. Karena Duolingo memiliki fitur streaks yang membuat pengguna termotivasi untuk belajar setiap hari, lama-kelamaan kita jadi hafal dengan kata-kata yang sering diulang. Saya juga tertegun tatkala menyadari bagaimana otak kita ini bisa beradaptasi dengan baik sewaktu belajar. Sebagai contoh, saya bisa belajar satu pelajaran Mandarin dan pindah ke bahasa Perancis segera setelah itu. Tidak ada masalah.

Apa yang terasa menantang adalah bagaimana kebiasaan kita dalam menyikapi bahasa baru dengan apa yang sudah kita ketahui. Dalam hal ini, patokan saya adalah Bahasa Inggris. Sebagai perbandingan, saya mengucapkan, "I eat at the French restaurant," tapi dalam bahasa Perancis, kalimatnya berubah, "je mange au restaurant français." Jadi français berada di posisi setelah kata restaurant. Struktur kalimat yang berbeda ini bisa terasa membingungkan. 

Karena saya belajar empat bahasa, saya jadi bisa melihat bahwa pelajaran untuk setiap bahasa ini berbeda-beda. Bahasa Perancis paling beragam pelajarannya dan mencakup cerita dan game yang dirancang untuk melatih pendengaran dan pengucapan. Bahasa Perancis ini juga memiliki petunjuk untuk tata bahasa. Tiga bahasa lainnya boleh dikatakan tidak ada sehingga kita sendiri yang harus memperhatikan pola tata bahasa yang sedang dipelajari. 

Tentang bahasa yang saya pelajari, saya paling berpengalaman dengan Mandarin. Saya juga bisa membaca pinyin, jadi apa yang saya pelajari lebih cenderung untuk mengingat kembali dan juga menambah wawasan. 

Bahasa Perancis adalah bahasa yang saya sukai dan untuk dipelajari. Kendati begitu, beberapa bagian seperti mengidentifikasi penggunaan le dan la tidak memiliki penjelasan yang baik sehingga satu-satunya cara adalah harus dihafal. 

Kata rekening berasal dari Bahasa Belanda.

Bahasa Belanda saya ambil lebih condong karena sejarah Bahasa Indonesia yang menyerap kata-kata dari bahasa tersebut. Cara bacanya pun mirip. Namun setelah dipelajari, tata bahasanya cukup memusingkan juga! 

Akan halnya bahasa Rusia, huruf-hurufnya seperti sandi. Setiap kalimatnya jadi terlihat seperti teka-teki, namun uniknya Bahasa Rusia ini adalah tata bahasanya yang primitif. Bukannya kata per kata seperti lumrahnya bahasa lain, Bahasa Rusia ini kadang terasa ringkas. Misalnya dalam bahasa Inggris, kalimatnya lengkap seperti ini, "Mark is a politician," namun dalam Bahasa Rusia, cukup begini: Марк — политик.

Nah, setelah belajar selama 149 hari, bagaimana hasilnya? Mari kita coba:

The Business Trip

I've joined the workforce since year 1998. My first job was at Hotel Kartika in Pontianak and I worked as a stock-keeper. Because Wisma Siantan Indah was owned by the same boss, I had to deliver goods to the inn across the river. My first and quite regular business trip, if I could call it that since it happened in the same town. 

Back to where it all started.

The pattern repeated when I moved to Jakarta and worked at Kalbe Farma. The company's factory is in Cikarang and it has many branches, so I'd go to offices in Jakarta such Rawagelam, Pulo Lentut, Tanah Abang, Fatmawati and many more. But my first and proper business trip had to be the visit to Sukajadi office in Bandung. My colleague Surijanto drove me there for an easy job: replacing a faulty network router. 

Then came the Medan trip in 2005, the first time I ever took a two-hour flight. I also had the first overseas trip to Singapore and Hong Kong for business purpose that year. Since I was never a brilliant network engineer, I'm pretty sure I was selected simply because I had a passport ready with me plus the fact that I was able converse in English (and Chinese to a certain extent), haha.

When I moved to Singapore and worked at Ong First, I was also sent to Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok for business trips with the worst arrangement ever: a day trip! So I had to fly out and return to Singapore on the same day. I met clients right after I landed and went back to the airport again immediately.

14 years into my current job, I flew once in a blue moon to Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur for work. The last one happened a week ago and it got me thinking about the pros and cons of such trips. All this while, the nature of my job didn't really require me to travel. I love travelling, but based on few trips that I did, I could say that business trip is my least favourite kind of trip.

Yes, I like meeting people, especially putting faces to the names I normally work with. But other than that, business trip doesn't offer much liberty because you are clearly there for work. Imagine visiting a new city but you don't have a chance to explore. So no, not exactly a fan. Given the choice, I'd rather pay for the trip myself and have the full freedom to travel properly. 

 Perjalanan Bisnis

Saya sudah mulai bekerja sejak tahun 1998, begitu saya lulus SMA. Profesi pertama saya berkaitan dengan bagian pengadaan barang di Hotel Kartika Pontianak. Karena Wisma Siantan Indah juga dikelola oleh pemilik yang sama, maka saya juga secara berkala mengantarkan barang-barang ke penginapan yang berada di seberang sungai. Meski masih dalam kota yang sama, boleh dikatakan itulah "perjalanan bisnis" dalam tiga tahun pertama saya di dunia kerja. 

Kembali ke Kartika di tahun 2023.

Pola serupa ini juga berulang ketika saya pindah ke Jakarta dan bekerja di Kalbe Farma. Perusahaan obat ini memiliki pabrik di Cikarang dan banyak kantor cabang. Di Jakarta, saya mengunjungi kantor-kantor di Rawagelam, Pulo Lentut, Tanah Abang, Fatmawati dan masih banyak lagi. Akan tetapi perjalanan bisnis saya  untuk pertama kalinya terjadi saat saya ke kantor di Sukajadi, Bandung. Di masa sebelum ada jalan tol, kolega saya Surijanto yang menyetir dan kita ke Bandung untuk tugas yang tergolong enteng: mengganti router yang rusak. 

Kemudian ada lagi perjalanan ke kantor cabang Medan di tahun 2005. Untuk pertama kalinya saya menaiki penerbangan yang berdurasi dua jam lamanya. Saya juga diberangkatkan ke Singapura dan Hong Kong di tahun yang sama. Terus-terang saya bukanlah pakar jaringan komputer, jadi sepertinya saya terpilih semata-mata karena saya memiliki paspor dan bisa berbahasa Inggris, plus Mandarin seadanya, haha.

Sewaktu saya hijrah ke Singapura dan bekerja di Ong First, saya sempat pula ditugaskan ke Kuala Lumpur dan Bangkok dalam rangka mengunjungi CIMB Bank dan Bangkok Bank, tapi pergi-pulang di hari yang sama. Saya harus bergegas menemui klien begitu tiba dan kembali ke bandara setelah misi tercapai. Sungguh melelahkan dan tidak menyenangkan. 

Memasuki tahun ke-14 di pekerjaan yang saya tekuni sekarang, sesekali saya pergi ke Jakarta dan Kuala Lumpur karena urusan kantor. Perjalanan bisnis terkini terjadi seminggu lalu dan membuat saya berpikir tentang pro dan kontra bepergian dalam rangka bisnis. Sejauh ini, pekerjaan saya cenderung tidak memerlukan saya untuk bertugas ke luar, namun berdasarkan pengalaman yang ada, saya bisa katakan bahwa saya tidak menyukai perjalanan bisnis.

Ya, saya senang bertemu dengan mereka yang selama ini hanya saya kenal sebatas nama. Namun ada rasa tidak bebas karena perjalanan bisnis itu memang dalam kapasitas pergi bekerja. Bayangkan jika kita pergi ke tempat yang baru dan tidak punya kesempatan untuk jalan-jalan. Dari sini saya bisa menyimpulkan, kalau saya bisa memilih, saya lebih suka bayar sendiri dan berjalan sepuas hati. 

Reinventing Oneself

It must have been established by now that I love the plastics. While each of them is unique in its own way, I always have the soft spot for Diners Club. The story of its origin, the unusual name, its glorious past as the first and how the mighty had fallen... I just love every bit of it. 

Things looked gloomy for Diners and I thought it would stay that way, hence imagine my surprise when I saw the changes. Not only the mobile app was modernized and the company name was changed to DCS Card Centre, but it also released a new card under the UnionPay logo! 

When I got mine (obviously), I found it odd that this was purely a UnionPay card. I reckon the company wanted to show what it meant when the name was changed to Card Centre, but it could have retained the Diners network to broaden the acceptance. It'd be interesting to have a card that worked as both Diners and UnionPay.

Anyway, while it wasn't perfect, Diners' decision to reinvent itself was bold and commendable. It wasn't something that happened very often and it reminded me of the day BlackBerry exited the phone business. Good for the company to focus on security business and be profitable from it, but bad for those who loved the phone like me. 

As I traced back, fundamental changes did happen to things I like, even to an icon as popular as Godzilla. After the disastrous Godzilla 1998, Toho decided to try again with the Americans. The result was Monsterverse that eventually delivered Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021. For the uninitiated, a similar film was first produced by Toho in 1962 and it was wildly popular. To be able to watch a modernized version of it was like a dream came true. I was so impressed when I watched it in the cinema that I couldn't help thinking this is how as Godzilla movie should be done. I remember that particular moment vividly.  

And then we had the Beatles, the master of reinventing themselves. They were so good at it, so ahead of its time, that peers like the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones were left behind. From Please Please Me to Let It Be, they never sounded the same. Just when the Beach Boys produced Pet Sounds, the Beatles topped the bill with Sgt. Pepper's. Rolling Stones could only hope for the best with Their Satanic Majesties Request. 

But of course not everyone could be like the Beatles. They are the benchmark, the perfection that people like us will always try to emulate and achieve. As for Godzilla, it's about the willingness to try even though we fail the first time. BlackBerry serves as a reminder that we can evolve into something different in order to survive, even though it may not be something that others know and love. And Diners, whatever they do now is definitely an improvement. It got me thinking that when you are already at the bottom of the pit, the only way to go from here onwards is up if we want to reinvent ourselves...

Mengubah Diri

Dari berbagai artikel roadblog101.com sejak tahun 2017, rasanya sudah sering diceritakan bahwa saya memang suka koleksi kartu kredit. Setiap logo kartu memiliki keunikan sendiri, tapi saya selalu memiliki perasaan sentimentil terhadap Diners Club. Asal mulanya, namanya yang tidak lazim, sejarahnya sebagai kartu kredit pertama, sampai terpuruknya reputasi Diners sekarang. Saya suka semuanya.

Situasi terlihat sulit bagi Diners yang kalah saing dan saya kira Diners akan selalu terlihat ketinggalan zaman. Jadi bayangkan betapa kagetnya saya ketika Diners tiba-tiba berubah. Bukan saja perusahaannya berganti nama dan mobile app-nya pun berubah, tapi Diners juga mengeluarkan kartu baru dengan logo UnionPay! 

Ketika saya mendapatkan kartu saya, ada rasa heran kenapa kartu ini murni UnionPay. Saya menerka bahwa kartu ini dikeluarkan sebagai UnionPay karena perusahaan ini ingin menunjukkan kenapa namanya diganti jadi DCS Card Centre yang berarti pusat kartu, tapi saya sempat menyangka bahwa kartu ini akan tetap mempertahankan jaringannya sendiri. Akan sungguh menarik bila kartu ini bisa dipakai di jaringan UnionPay dan Diners.

Kendati tidak sempurna, aksi nyata yang ditunjukkan Diners untuk berubah adalah sesuatu yang berani dan patut dikagumi. Ini tidak sering terjadi dan mengingatkan saya kembali pada hari di mana BlackBerry memutuskan untuk keluar dari bisnis telepon genggam. Bagus untuk perusahaannya untuk sepenuhnya fokus pada bisnis keamanan komputer, tapi tidak bagus untuk pencinta telepon BlackBerry seperti saya. 

Ketika saya melihat kembali, perubahan mendasar seperti ini terjadi pada beberapa hal yang saya sukai, bahkan sesuatu yang sudah begitu ikonik dan populer seperti Godzilla. Setelah Godzilla 1998 yang gagal total, Toho memutuskan untuk mencoba lagi dengan produser film Amerika. Hasil kerja sama dari sejak Godzilla 2014 ini akhirnya melahirkan Godzilla vs. Kong di tahun 2021. Bagi yang tidak tahu, film serupa diproduksi oleh Toho di tahun 1962 dan sukses besar. Bisa menyaksikan kembali versi modern dari pertarungan Godzilla dan Kong sungguh bagaikan impian yang menjadi kenyataan. Saya begitu terkesan sampai berpikir bahwa seperti inilah film Godzilla seharusnya digarap. Saya ingat betul pikiran tersebut terlintas di benak saya saat di bioskop.

Dan kemudian ada the Beatles yang senantiasa berubah menjadi lebih baik dan menciptakan sesuatu yang baru. Mereka begitu pakar dalam hal ini, begitu jauh di depan, sampai-sampai grup lain seperti Beach Boys dan Rolling Stones tertinggal di belakang. Dari Please Please Me sampai Let It Be, the Beatles tidak pernah terdengar sama. Sewaktu Beach Boys merilis Pet Sounds, the Beatles menandinginya dan keluar sebagai pemenang dengan Sgt. Pepper's. Rolling Stones hanya bisa mengekor di belakang dengan Their Satanic Majesties Request. 

Akan tetapi tentu saja tidak semua bisa menjadi seperti the Beatles. Mereka adalah standar dan inspirasi bagi orang-orang seperti saya yang selalu mengejar dan mencapai impian seperti mereka. Akan halnya Godzilla, perlu dicatat bagaimana mereka mencoba lagi meski gagal di kali pertama. Kalau BlackBerry adalah sebuah kisah nyata bagaimana evolusi menjadi sesuatu yang sama sekali berbeda kadang diperlukan agar tidak lenyap oleh waktu, meskipun perubahan itu bukan lagi sesuatu yang digemari khalayak ramai. Dan apa pun yang mereka lakukan di Diners sekarang jelas merupakan peningkatan. Ini adalah contoh, bilamana kita sudah di bawah, maka satu-satunya yang akan terjadi bila kita mau berubah adalah peningkatan dan kemajuan...
