Mortality

Sometimes, when we're in a dire or impossible situation, my friend Bernard normally says a slightly modified quote from Galvatron (that's Megatron on steroids!) that we must die, sometimes. That's when we realise that shit has happened and we have to accept it. Upon realising that there's no way out, we just laugh about it (that does make us feel better) and embrace whatever that comes next.

Still, if we gotta be serious about it, the very literal definition of death itself is very real and it's no laughing matter. One can't just ignore it after hearing the news. Personally, it gets me thinking about my own mortality as well, just like what happened today: I woke up to the news that a school friend of mine had passed away last night due to an illness related to liver.

The guy's name was Tony. I can't say that I knew him well, but we did have a fair bit of interaction during our secondary school days. He was known for his antics then, but my fondest memory of him was the fact that he had Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla video cassette, a rare item in Pontianak back in the days, and he kindly lent it to me much to my delight.

The last time I bumped into him was, perhaps, in the late 90s. Many of us were studying in Kuching then and I was at the bus departure point in my hometown, sending off Endrico and friends. That's when I spotted him and immediately snapped his picture using my trusted Ricoh camera. The result is the one below, reproduced digitally and published online here for the first time. May God rest his soul.

Tony was about the same age as me or slightly older by a year. You know the saying that life begins at 40? Tony could have been part of that but, for a cosmic reason that we neither know nor understand, it didn’t work out that way for him. It feels like only yesterday we saw him smiling in a gathering at Meetingpoint Cafe then today he's gone. It gets me thinking how life can be that fragile. We can only plan and work towards the plan, but eventually we're not the ones who decide on anything. Like it or not, the decision maker is the One above.

Having said that, it doesn't mean that we stop trying. Perhaps knowing that we're not the ones who decide actually means we should stop worrying too much. We should have played our part and lived our lives to the fullest instead, so that when the time is up, hopefully there won't be much regret. As we age, as we hear more and more news about friends falling sick and dying, I'm wondering if it's the way of life reminding us that we gotta treasure the time we have and live while we're alive.

I told my wife once or twice that when I look back, I've had a wonderful life. I'm not the richest, the smartest or whatever, but throughout my life, I've lived a life full of great friends, laughed the loudest at every joke, cried the saddest tears when I have to and met all the great real life heroes that helped me along the way. I also managed to tick off items on my wish list such as visiting Liverpool or attending Paul McCartney's concert. On top of all this, I'm married to the woman I love and a proud father of two these days. I have my fair share of burdens and problems, of course, but they don't change the fact that I'm a happy man. I've been blessed, I reckon. I'm not bragging or comparing notes here, but I'm merely sharing with you all, hoping that such perspective could be useful for self-reflection.‎ If you have been too busy all this while, perhaps you want to take some time to relook at things and reorganise some priorities in your life before it's too late.

It's a sad day today, but let's not dwell too much on a sombre note. I'd say we cherish the good times we had with the man himself. Let's also be reminded that death is inevitable. For me, as much as I'd laugh at the mention of Bernard's quote, there is also this tinge of ironic feeling that it is as real as it gets. We must die, sometimes. We just have to accept that, huh?

Anyway, I'll close this chapter with another verses from the same song that I quoted in the previous article I wrote, the one called My Valentine. Tony, this one's for you:

"There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All this places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've love them all..."

The smile that had brightened the world. Rest in peace, my friend...

Kehidupan Yang Fana

"There are places I remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever not for better
Some have gone and some remain

All this places have their moments
With lovers and friends I still can recall
Some are dead and some are living
In my life, I've love them all..."
