Google Home And Music

When I set up Google Nest Wifi, the existence of the speaker meant for Google Assistant simply couldn't be ignored as if it was begging for you to use it. One thing that I immediately tested right after noticing it was to play music. 

In order to play the music seamlessly without ads, you'd have to link the Google Home with either Spotify or YouTube Music. Prior to this, I never used any music app before. As you might have noticed, I was an avid CD fan, but I was so intrigued this time that I just had to try it out. 

Spotify was the first one that I tried out. As a result, it became a benchmark, too. The app interface was so intuitive that I felt like I knew what to do with it to get what I wanted. I also liked the lyrics that kept scrolling up as I played the song. 

Now, with Spotify as my introduction to music app, I'd naturally expect YouTube Music to be more superior. I mean, it was from Google, so the user experience must be better, right? Turned out that it wasn't exactly true. Yes, it was capable of switching from audio to video, but when the intention was to only listen to music, I found that I wasn't even bothered to switch on the video, so the feature was unused. And, while this might look trivial, I disliked the extra step of clicking the lyrics tab. It didn't feel seamless. 

After the trial version expired, I switched from YouTube Music to Apple Music. I'd have to say it was worse than the previous one. It felt like a mobile version of iTunes and in a world where it had to compete with Spotify, it certainly felt outdated. To make it worse, it wasn't compatible with Google Home, at least in Singapore. It couldn't be used as a music provider!

It was fatal. After going through the privilege of just literally asking Google to play the songs I'd like to hear, I was now deprived from it. I disliked the feeling. It was like knowing that the feature was there but I couldn't use it because Apple Music was incompatible.

Confused? Okay, let's have a step back. Nowadays there was this little something called casting. What it did was broadcasting what we played on the phone to another devices such as TV and speakers. In this context, I was referring to Google Nest speakers. 

All three apps I mentioned earlier could cast the songs. No issue with this. But what I fancied was the ability to play music by just saying hey Google and what I wanted to hear spontaneously. While this worked perfectly with Spotify and YouTube Music, it simply couldn't be done with Apple Music because it wasn't listed as music providers.

Back to the original statement above, I had been a CD fan for the longest time, but the experience was so cool that I might have had a change of heart. I liked the newfound freedom that I could play music as I stepped into any room in my house. It was something I couldn't do before. And as for the music provider, I think Spotify worked best for me...

Ketika saya memasang Google Nest Wifi, keberadaan speaker berkomunikasi dengan Google Assistant tidak bisa diabaikan begitu saja karena terlihat jelas di depan mata. Oleh karena itu saya lantas melakukan uji coba dengan cara memutar lagu. 

Supaya lagu-lagu bisa dipilih dan diputar tanpa selingan iklan, saya harus menghubungkan Google Home dengan penyedia musik, misalnya Spotify atau YouTube Music. Saya lantas membuka akun dan mencoba versi gratis selama sebulan. Sebelum ini, saya tidak pernah menggunakan aplikasi musik di telepon genggam. Seperti yang mungkin sudah anda ketahui, saya adalah pencinta CD lagu, tapi kali saya sungguh tergelitik sehingga mencoba fitur yang tersedia. 

Spotify adalah aplikasi pertama yang saya coba pakai dan hasilnya pun menjadi standar bagi aplikasi selanjutnya. Aplikasi ini terasa intuitif dan saya tidak mengalami kesulitan penggunaan. Saya juga suka dengan liriknya yang dinamis dalam menampilkan bagian yang sedang dinyanyikan. 

Setelah sebulan bersama Spotify, saya berharap bahwa YouTube Music akan lebih bagus lagi aplikasinya. Maksud saya, ini produk asli dari Google, jadi seharusnya lebih mantap, bukan? Namun ternyata tidak begitu ceritanya. Ya, YouTube Music bisa menampilkan audio dan video, tapi apa yang saya inginkan hanyalah mendengarkan musik, jadi saya bahkan tidak pernah sempat untuk menonton videonya sehingga fitur ini sama sekali tidak terpakai. Dan satu hal lain yang mungkin terlihat remeh tapi tidak praktis adalah langkah ekstra untuk melihat lirik lagu. Dari sudut pandang pengalaman seorang pengguna aplikasi, ini bukanlah hal yang positif.

Setelah versi gratis selama sebulan berakhir, saya berpindah dari YouTube Music ke Apple Music. Saya jujur katakan bahwa rasanya ini lebih buruk dari aplikasi sebelumnya. Tampilannya seperti versi ringkas dari iTunes dan di dunia dimana Apple Music harus bersaing dengan Spotify, aplikasinya terasa ketinggalan zaman. Lebih parah lagi, Apple Music tidak bisa dipakai sebagai penyedia musik bagi Google Home di Singapura!

Ini sungguh fatal. Setelah merasakan betapa praktisnya berujar meminta Google Assistant untuk memutar lagu, kebebasan saya bagaikan direnggut paksa. Saya tidak suka perasaan dimana saya tahu fitur ini ada, tapi tidak bisa dipakai karena Apple Music.

Anda merasa bingung? Baiklah, mari kita mundur selangkah. Sekarang ini ada yang namanya casting. Teknologi ini memungkin pengguna aplikasi untuk memancarkan apa yang sedang dimainkan di telepon genggam ke TV atau speaker. Di dalam konteks cerita kita ini, yang saya maksudkan adalah speaker Google Nest.

Tiga aplikasi di atas bisa melakukan casting. Tidak ada masalah dengan fitur ini. Tapi yang saya sukai adalah kebebasan dalam memutar lagu hanya dengan mengucapkan hey Google dan juga lagu yang ingin saya dengarkan secara spontan. Ini yang kini tidak bisa dilakukan lagi karena Apple Music tidak terdaftar sebagai penyedia musik di Google Home.

Kembali ke pernyataan di atas, saya adalah penggemar CD dari sejak dulu kala, namun kini pendapat saya berbeda. Saya suka dengan kebebasan baru yang saya miliki dan memungkinkan saya untuk bisa memutar lagu di setiap ruangan di rumah. Ini adalah sesuatu yang tidak bisa saya lakukan sebelumnya, saat mendengarkan musik dari CD. Akan halnya pilihan untuk penyedia musik, saya rasa Spotify paling cocok untuk saya...
