Book Review: Renegades - Born In The USA

I'm always a fan of Obama. Like the way he speaks. Smart, funny and eloquent. His life story was interesting, too. Read one from the time before he became a president and another that told about his presidency. Both were great books, so naturally, when I saw one about him and Bruce Springsteen, I was interested.

I'm also a big fan of music, but for some strange reason, I never listened to Springsteen apart from few snippets such as two verses he sang in We Are the World and a song called Streets of Philadelphia. I knew he was the Boss, but that was pretty much it. Hence I was wondering how he and Obama could come up with this book. What brought them together?

Out of curiosity, I checked out the library and got the book. It turned out to be a coffee-table book, large and lavishly illustrated. The content was originally a podcast series that was turned into a book. After reading the first few pages, it was obvious that they came together because of one vision: America.

Yes, this book was very... American. It gave you an idea of how it was like to be an American. It gave you an idea of what it meant for the two of them to be Americans. Bruce supported Obama during his campaign and they gradually became friends simply because they believed in the same America.

Born in the USA, as Bruce put it. But reading this as a non-American, I couldn't help feeling that the topic wasn't very engaging. There were things that I couldn't comprehend and after a while, I grew tired of it. As a result, this was one the few books that I glanced through instead of properly reading it. I paid attention only to certain topics, like the parts where Bruce talked about performing with a Beatle (George Harrison) and a Rolling Stone (Mick Jagger) by his sides. It was an achievement for a boy from New Jersey!

Can't say I learnt much about Obama from this book, but I certainly picked up a thing or two about Bruce. No, I'm still not a fan of his songs, but I'm quite impressed with his lifelong friendship with Clarence Clemons. That was probably the most inspiring story about America from the book. Other than that and those nice photos, it was not a great Obama book...

The book and the podcast on Spotify.

Ulasan Buku: Renegades - Born In The USA

Saya selalu menggemari Obama. Saya suka caranya berbicara.

Yang pernah saya dengar cuma suara Bruce di We Are the World dan lagu berjudul Streets of Philadelphia.

Born in the USA, demikian judul lagu Bruce.
