The Oldies

I remember the time when music wasn't a big deal in my life. Back then, I only owned Michael's Thriller and Bad (it was almost impossible to grow up in the 80s and not be impressed by the King of Pop). Other than that, I listened to my cousin's collection of rock bands such as Roxette, Heart, Europe and Bon Jovi. Then the Beatles came along and changed my life forever. I was convinced that rock and roll was the best thing that ever happened on earth.

Around the same time, boy bands such as Take That or Boyzone were also busy covering songs that sounded familiar, as if I'd heard them before in the past (Dad had a massive collection of vinyls and cassettes that he'd play when I was a little boy). Through How Deep Is Your Love, I discovered the Bee Gees. I was amazed by how good the song was. It was a hit when it was released in 1977 and it was still as good as ever in 1996. Good songs were simply everlasting!

That's when I began to explore the Oldies. Since the Beatles were great, I reckoned that the songs from ex-Beatles should be a safe bet and a good starting point, haha. But unlike the Beatles, their albums were scarce in Pontianak. I could only find the cassette of John Lennon Collection and it was only much later on that I found Paul's All the Best! in Jakarta. Upon listening to the albums, I soon realised that what I thought earlier was not exactly true. John's songs were overrated mainly because of his legendary status. The fact is, while songs like Imagine are good, I couldn't help noticing that without Paul, John's songs became less melodic. Paul's compilation didn't suffer that much, though. Some, especially No More Lonely Nights, were actually very good, but they lack of a certain Beatlesque quality. With the Beatles, there is this sense of excitement and joy. Apparently it took the four of them to produce that feeling. It was their combined talents that made the Beatles' songs so loveable.

I also branched out from Bee Gees and found Andy Gibb's Greatest Hits. I think I bought the cassette together with Ringo's Time Takes Time when I visited Kuching. Just like Barry, he could do falsetto, too. When he didn't, his vocals were like a rougher version of Barry's. Because he was heavily supported by his brothers, his music was very Bee Gee-like. Stuff like Shadow Dancing or An Everlasting Love could have been something that was sung by the Bee Gees. A personal favorite? (Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away.

Now that I had exhausted the list of artists that were related to the Beatles and Bee Gees, I ventured out into the unknown territory. My next one was either Phil Collins or John Denver. I couldn't be too sure which one came first, but I probably started listening to John Denver when Armageddon was showing. The movie had a soundtrack called Leaving on a Jetplane. Just like what I did before with How Deep Is Your Love, I traced back and found John Denver. Much to my delight, I realised that he was also the same guy who wrote Take Me Home, Country Roads, an old song that I had heard long ago. John was a brilliant songwriter and a good singer. His music was my first exposure to country music. Love his greatest hits.

Same can't be said for Phil Collins, though. Here's a man who wrote Another Day in Paradise. A good song, he still got plenty of other hits such One More Night, Easy Lover, Separate Lives and many more, but yet not all songs in the compilation felt like greatest hits. Furthermore, there's something about his drumming that I somehow don't like. Don't get me wrong. He's one helluva drummer, but he's just not Ringo.

Just when I thought Phil Collins wasn't suitable for me, little did I know that my next choice was even more outrageous. I remember going to Queen, my favorite store that was located nearby the traffic light of Gajahmada road in Pontianak. I was in doubt and nervous about my next purchase of greatest hits (oh yeah, I always went for the greatest hits, because if the compilation was bad, then the original albums shouldn't be any better), then I just said to the storekeeper that I wanted the Doors. Then I got the look that always made me cringe: it was that inquisitive glance, silently prying why this youngster was looking for something obscure that nobody else asked for.

But the Doors was indeed an odd choice. I just didn't know it yet. The moment I played the cassette, I couldn't believe what I heard. Riders on the Storm was dark and brooding. The electric piano was haunting. And then came the deep and rich baritone voice of Jim Morrison. I never heard such vocals in any songs before. The next song, Light My Fire, was even more bizarre. Ray Manzarek's organ playing was too psychedelic for my taste. In all fairness, I don't think the Doors music is bad, it's just too far-out for me.

The next one, still from Queen music store, was the Rolling Stones. Oh yes, I surely had to check out how their music was like, but apparently I got nothing to worry about. For a band often touted as the rival of the Beatles, I'm afraid they'd have to try harder, haha. The thing with Jump Back: the Best of the Rolling Stones was, some tracks such as It's Only Rock 'n Roll or Brown Sugar sounded rough and muddled. For a lead singer, Mick's vocals weren't as strong as I expected and it was even awful at times. Only Charlie's drumming and Keith's guitar playing were reliable. I like Keith's contribution especially in Angie and Between the Rock and a Hard Place

Then of course I had to check out the King of Rock and Roll. I had this cassette called Elvis the Essential Collection. The first song was Heartbreak Hotel, a very primitive song that was bluesy and full of echo. I didn't like it then, but appreciate it now. It's actually kind of cool, bringing out the emotion of the song with just so little instruments and Elvis' voice. However, it was Blue Suede Shoes that showed me why Elvis was the King. He was at his best for a short period of time, until he became just another crooner singing songs such as Wooden Heart or It's Now or Never. I had nothing against those songs, but Elvis was supposed to be the King of Rock and Roll and it felt like he gave it up when he sang those songs.

After the King, I think I tried out Queen. No pun intended, haha. Queen was a very charming band consisting of four talented people that were capable of writing hits. I mean, this was the band that churned out Bohemian Rhapsody (written by Freddie, We Will Rock You (Brian May), Another One Bites the Dust (John Deacon), Radio Ga Ga (Roger Taylor) and many more. You don't see band like this very often. On top of that, they were brilliant performers. I remember the time when I listened to Live at Wembley '86 and watched it on YouTube many years later. Freddie's vocals were solid. When they were on stage, they would definitely rock you. Queen is definitely one of few bands that'll impress you with their greatest hits collection. When We Are the Champions, the last track on the album, finished playing, I could only concur that they were indeed the champions. Oh, if I have to single out one song as my favourite, that'll be Don't Stop Me Now. It's wild. Love the guitar solo, too!

Another one from the 70s, this time from the disco era, was Boney M. It may be very hard to imagine now that such a band could be popular back then, but apart from the repetitive Sunny or Daddy Cool, their songs were actually fun. I like Rasputin and only Boney M could bring us an upbeat Mary's Boy Child (you should try Harry Belafonte's version if you don't believe me). I think I bought the greatest hits in Jakarta. It was called 20th Century Hits.

And the next one was, perhaps, the one you are waiting for. Oh yes, I'm not immune to ABBA, too. My story with ABBA started with this unforgettable piano piece that I heard when I was a kid. I later discovered that it was the signature intro from Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight). The greatest hits album, ABBA Gold, was aptly named. Started with Dancing Queen and ended with Waterloo, the songs were all killers, no fillers. That's why I immediately jumped at the chance to watch their musical, haha. Less known to many is, perhaps, the fact that ABBA wwas a great performing act as well. Just listen to the album Live at Wembley Arena (or watch it on YouTube) and you'll know what I mean.

My adventure, of course, wouldn't be complete if I didn't check out My Way. It was solely for this song that I bought the Best of Frank Sinatra. It didn't disappoint. Frank's voice and the way he sang were simply inimitable. As a comparison, Elvis sang the same song, too, but Frank definitely owned it. The song was his signature, not Elvis. The rest of songs in the album, ranging from Something Stupid, Moon River, to Strangers in the Night were alright, they broadened my horizon about how traditional pop songs sounded like.

I think Frank Sinatra was the last collection I had during the cassettes era. Soon after that, I was working in Jakarta and a colleague of mine introduced Kazaa to me. It was the beginning of MP3 era and peer-to-peer file sharing was rampant at that time. Everything you searched could be found there (although half of the contents might be virus, haha). I built up my Oldies inventory during this period. I listened to the Beatles' rock and roll heroes, from Chuck Berry, Little Richard to Buddy Holly. I found legendary stuff such as Don McLean's American Pie. I even got hold of one hit wonders like Robert John's Sad Eyes. Sudarman, a friend of mine who's also a music fan, helped me out with long lost gems such as Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep by Middle of the Road. By the time I left Jakarta, I had immersed myself into all sort of genres, from something as ancient as Doris Day's Que Sera Sera to rock music like Bon Jovi's It's My Life. I think I skipped only jazz, haha.

I listen to only a handful of selected artists these days. The Beatles, the all four ex-Beatles, Bee Gees, ABBA, Simon & Garfunkel, Eric Clapton as well as some other bands that were from my time like Michael Learns to Rock, Oasis and Guns N' Roses. I had quit iPod years ago and no Spotify for me, too. I stick with CD instead, the good old-fashioned way of listening to an album. I guess that's the beauty of being older than before. If life is ever an adventure, may be the old songs will bring back the good memories...

John Lennon Signature Box.

Tembang Lawas

Kemudian the Beatles muncul dan mengubah hidup saya.

Lewat How Deep Is Your Love, saya menemukan Bee Gees. Lagu bagus ternyata memang abadi!

Dari situlah saya mulai mencoba tembang lawas. The Beatles adalah grup musik terbaik, jadi saya mengira bahwa memulai dari lagu-lagu yang ditulis oleh mantan anggota the Beatles adalah langkah yang paling aman, haha. Akan tetapi, berbeda halnya dengan the Beatles, rekaman mereka sulit ditemukan. Saya hanya bisa mendapatkan kaset the John Lennon Collection. Beberapa tahun kemudian di Jakarta, saya baru mendapatkan kaset All the Best! yang berisi lagu-lagu populer Paul McCartney. Beberapa karyanya, misalnya No More Lonely Nights, menjadi favorit saya.

Lagu favorit saya? (Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away.

Film tersebut menampilkan lagu berjudul Leaving on a Jetplane. Seperti halnya How Deep Is Your Love, saya menelusuri asal-usul lagu ini dan menemukan John Denver. Di saat yang sama, saya juga baru menyadari bahwa dia adalah penulis lagu Take Me Home, Country Roads, sebuah lagu lama yang pernah saya dengar bertahun-tahun silam. Lagu-lagu John Denver merupakan koleksi lagu country pertama saya. Bagus albumnya.

George Harrison - The Apple Years.

Riders on the Storm terasa gelap dan mencekam.

Album Jump Back: the Best of the Rolling Stones berisi lagu-lagu seperti It's Only Rock 'n Roll or Brown Sugar yang terdengar redup dan ricuh rekamannya. Saya suka kontribusi Keith dalam Angie dan Between the Rock and a Hard Place

It's Now or Never.

Setelah sang Raja, saya mencoba Queen. Suatu kebetulan? Haha. Ini adalah grup yang menelurkan lagu-lagu seperti Bohemian Rhapsody (ditulis oleh Freddie), We Will Rock You (Brian May), Another One Bites the Dust (John Deacon), Radio Ga Ga (Roger Taylor) dan masih banyak lagi.

Albumnya berjudul 20th Century Hits.

ABBA - Live at Wembley Arena.

Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).

Untuk lagu inilah saya membeli album the Best of Frank Sinatra. Bicara tentang My Way berarti bicara tentang Frank Sinatra.
