Gotham

John Lennon once wrote, "woman, I know you understand, the little child inside the man." That was his way of saying that men don't really grow up. While I can't speak for all men, I always feel represented by the lyrics. Now, our story today began few nights ago, when I couldn't hide my excitement after I finished watching an episode of the Gotham series. When she asked why, I tried to explain, but I could tell that she looked rather lost. Perhaps she simply failed to understand what was so exciting about some bad guys running loose. Couldn't blame her, though, haha. Still, the scenes meant a lot to me. I just have this urge to write and share about how great the show was, so here we go.

Let's begin from the top: DC superheroes. I'm a big fan and I always think that Hal and Arthur, better known as Green Lantern and Aquaman, are the coolest. Batman, on the other hand... not so much. I mean, he was practically a normal human being, albeit a super rich one. Nevertheless, the character was so popular that the stories were easily found, even in Pontianak.  Thanks to the extensive collection owned by my cousin, I'd been reading about the Dark Knight since I was a kid in the 80s. I also collected those that were published by Misurind back in the 90s. I remember stories about the Joker and the Penguin (always with his umbrella in one hand) running around, scheming against Batman and Robin. Long before the story grew darker and the bad guys became deadly (Killing Joke and a Death in the Family, for example), the Joker and his comrades were rather mild and funny.

The point is, throughout the years, DC had managed to build a vast and very much established Dark Knight lore. We got all sorts of supporting characters such as Alfred, Gordon, Bullock, Dr. Thompkins, the Outsiders, Batgirl, Batwoman, and many more. Talk about Robin, we got not only one, but multiple Robins (though I still prefer Dick Grayson, the original Boy Wonder). On top of that, there was this impressive rogues gallery. This is where things got interesting. The supervillains (and I believe they need no introduction anymore) were actually so badass and charming that readers ended up rooting for them, too.

While I never really like Batman, a good Batman story is always captivating. The Long Halloween was one of them and it had a very engaging storyline: before the rise of the so-called freaks, there were the crime families led by Falcone and Maroni (it was during this period that Harvey Dent was disfigured, causing him to transform into Two-Face). Then there was Batman: Hush, easily my all-time favorite. It was again written by Jeph Loeb, the same person that wrote the aforementioned story. In this series, Batman had to fight his way through Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, the Joker, the Riddler, Scarecrow, Ra's Al Ghul and plenty of others, including Superman! Drawn by the great Jim Lee, Batman: Hush was a gorgeous piece of art!

Those were just two of many good comics starring Batman, but great though they were, none had taken the time to passionately tell the rise of Dark Knight through the medium of comics. Gotham filled that glaring gap and made it so interesting. The series began with the death of Bruce's parents and while I'm pretty sure I know how it's going to end, the untold stories that brought me there are very enjoyable.

In a world before Batman, there was Jim Gordon. Before the future Arkham inmates, there was Don Falcone. But as the story progressed, we could see that the supervillains were rising and Gordon was struggling to bring them down. Oswald Cobblepot, limping like a penguin since the start of the show, was heavily featured and he wasn't the type to be sidelined. Edward Nygma was there, too, and it didn't take long for the likes of them to burst onto the scene. Then there was these lunatic twins, the Joker lookalike. By the end of season four, all hell broke loose. All the supervillains were out of Arkham Asylum, Gotham became no man's land and Gordon lighted up the giant spotlight on the roof, a precursor to Bat-Signal. I was so hyped up when I saw all these. There's only one way this will end: Bruce will become Batman!

While the show was basically an uncharted territory, it also incorporated the familiar ground that comics readers would recognise and they blended in nicely. I like how it started with the end of Falcone only to introduce a much more powerful Sacred Order of Saint Dumas. The Court of Owls appeared after that, then followed by Ra's Al Ghul. While the sequences above weren't exactly how they happened in comics, they fitted in quite well. Then of course there was this scene where Jeremiah shot Selina, a homage to the famous scene from the Killing Joke.

Not all were done properly, though. I personally think that Harvey Dent was underutilised. After some time, he simply disappeared from the story. Same thing happened to Montoya. We never get to see Two-Face and the Question. Lee Thompkins was drastically changed, too. She was de-aged, becoming the love interest of Jim Gordon and she's now dead (but soon to be resurrected by Hugo Strange).

Despite the shortcomings, it's been a great show, though. The last season was superb! Now that the old guard had died and the bad guys were on their way to become the supervillains that we know and love, I was ecstatic to see their interaction, especially when Penguin decided to betray the pseudo-Joker and his allies (even though Penguin was himself a cold-blooded murderer, he wasn't comfortable with how crazy Jerome was). Overall, it's been fun and we're in for one last ride next year (I heard Bane is joining the crowd)! The Dark Knight rises!

Gotham

John Lennon pernah menulis, "wanita, saya tahu kamu bisa memahami, anak kecil di dalam diri pria." Itu adalah caranya untuk menggambarkan bahwa seorang pria tidak pernah benar-benar tumbuh dewasa. Saya tidak bisa berbicara mewakili semua lelaki, namun saya selalu merasa bahwa lirik ini relevan untuk saya. Contohnya apa yang terjadi beberapa malam yang lalu, ketika istri saya melihat suka-cita yang terpancar di wajah saya. Saat dia bertanya ada apa, saya pun mencoba untuk menjelaskan, namun saya bisa melihat bahwa dia tampak bingung. Barangkali dia gagal paham, apanya yang seru dengan segerombolan penjahat berkeliaran. Saya hanya bisa memakluminya, haha. Kendati begitu, adegan tersebut besar artinya buat saya sehingga saya pun terdorong untuk bercerita. 

Untuk memahami semua ini, mari kita mulai dari awal: para pahlawan super dari DC. Saya adalah seorang penggemar dan saya senantiasa berpikir bahwa Hal dan Arthur, yang mungkin lebih anda kenal sebagai Green Lantern dan Aquaman, adalah pahlawan super yang paling menarik. Tidak demikian halnya dengan Batman. Dia cuma manusia biasa yang kaya-raya. Akan tetapi tidak bisa dipungkiri bahwa Ksatria Malam ini begitu populer, bahkan di Pontianak pun gampang didapatkan ceritanya. Saya sudah membaca tentang Batman sejak tahun 80an. Kebetulan sepupu saya memiliki koleksi yang cukup ekstensif. Memasuki dekade 90an, saya juga mulai mengoleksi komik Batman yang diterbitkan oleh Misurind. Saya ingat dengan cerita jaman dulu, dimana Joker dan Penguin (yang selalu membawa payung) berseteru dengan Batman dan Robin. Ini adalah zaman ketika musuh Batman masih lucu, jauh sebelum alur cerita komik menjadi kelam dan para penjahat ini bertambah brutal (serial komik a Death in the Family misalnya, dimana Joker membunuh Robin). 

Intinya adalah, setelah beberapa dekade lamanya, legenda Batman pun lahir. Pemeran pendukungnya berlimpah, mulai dari Alfred, Gordon, Bullock, dokter Thompkins, Outsiders, Batgirl, Batwoman dan masih banyak lagi. Kalau kita bicara tentang Robin, sebenarnya Robin bukan cuma satu orang. Sejauh saya bisa mengingat, ada empat Robin, tapi yang menjadi favorit saya tetap Dick Grayson, Robin yang pertama. Tidak hanya itu, Batman juga memiliki aneka musuh yang aneh penampilan dan latar belakangnya. Mereka ini begitu unik sehingga menjadi daya tarik sendiri. Ingat film The Dark Knight? Saya justru lebih suka melihat Joker dibandingkan Batman di film tersebut. Akting almarhum Heath Ledger sangat luar biasa! 

Walau saya tidak begitu menggemari Batman, saya suka membaca cerita Batman yang bagus. The Long Halloween adalah salah satu judul yang pantas untuk disebutkan di sini. Serial ini mengisahkan tahun-tahun pertama Batman, sebelum para penjahat yang kita kenal menguasai Gotham. Saat itu Gotham berada di bawah cengkeraman para mafia yang dipimpin oleh Falcone di satu kubu dan Maroni di kubu lain (Harvey Dent disiram air keras dan cacat wajah membuatnya gila sehingga menjelma menjadi Two-Face). Lantas ada lagi serial yang berjudul Batman: Hush. Cerita favorit saya ini juga ditulis oleh Jeph Loeb, penulis yang mengarang judul sebelumnya. Dalam cerita kali ini, Batman harus bertarung melawan Killer Croc, Joker, Riddler, Scarecrow, Ra's Al Ghul dan bahkan Superman yang berada dalam pengaruh Poison Ivy! Komik yang digambar oleh Jim Lee yang terkenal handal ini adalah sebuah karya seni yang indah!  

Apa yang disinggung secara sekilas di atas hanyalah dua dari banyak cerita menarik dengan Batman sebagai tokoh utamanya. Kendati begitu, sejauh yang saya tahu, belum ada cerita komik yang mengulas asal mula Batman secara detil. Di sinilah letak keunggulan dan daya tarik Gotham yang khusus membahas tentang periode ini. 

Ceritanya bermula dari terbunuhnya orang tua Bruce. Di dunia sebelum Batman, ada Jim Gordon. Sebelum para penghuni Arkham bermunculan, ada Don Falcone. Seiring dengan bergulirnya cerita, kita bisa melihat munculnya para musuh bebuyutan Batman yang kian lama kian menyulitkan Gordon. Oswald Cobblepot yang berjalan tertatih-tatih sejak permulaan film seri bisa dikatakan sebagai salah satu tokoh utamanya. Edward Nygma yang juga sering tampil perlahan-lahan menunjukkan kecintaannya terhadap teka-teki. Karakter mereka semakin lama semakin terbentuk dan akhirnya mereka semua menjadi para penjahat yang kita kenal di komik. Di penghujung seri ke-4, Gotham akhirnya rusuh. Para penjahat yang disekap di Arkham akhirnya meloloskan diri. Di saat Gotham porak-poranda dan menjadi negeri tak bertuan, Gordon akhirnya menyalakan lampu sorot di atas gedung, cikal-bakal Bat-Signal. Saya sungguh terbawa oleh suasana ini. Semua ini akan berakhir dengan berubahnya Bruce menjadi Batman!

Meski kisah yang diangkat di film seri ini boleh dikatakan topik baru yang belum pernah dibahas di komik, para penulis naskah juga memasukkan banyak hal yang bisa segera dikenali para pembaca komik. Saya suka dengan ceritanya yang dibuka dengan berakhirnya era Falcone. Seri ke-2 berfokus pada Sacred Order of Saint Dumas dan menampilkan Azrael. Court of Owls muncul di seri-3, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan munculnya Ra's Al Ghul. Kemudian ada pula adegan dimana Jeremiah menembak Selina. Ini adalah adegan terkenal yang diadaptasi dari komik the Killing Joke.

Namun tidak semuanya berhasil diceritakan dengan baik. Saya senantiasa merasa bahwa penokohan Harvey Dent cenderung terabaikan. Setelah dua seri, dia tidak muncul lagi sampai sekarang. Sama halnya juga dengan Montoya. Alhasil kita tidak pernah melihat Two-Face dan Question. Lee Thompkins juga berubah drastis. Dia ditampilkan lebih muda dan sempat menjadi pacar Jim Gordon dan sekarang dia tewas (walaupun tampaknya dia akan dihidupkan lagi oleh Hugo Strange). 

Walau film seri ini memiliki kekurangan-kekurangan di atas, secara keseluruhan ceritanya sudah tergolong bagus, terutama seri ke-4! Setelah era mafia berakhir, tokoh-tokoh seperti Penguin, Riddler, Scarecrow, Mad Hatter kini berkeliaran di Gotham. Saya suka melihat interaksi mereka, terutama saat Penguin memutuskan untuk mengkhianati persekutuannya dengan Jerome yang mirip dengan Joker (meski Penguin sendiri tidak pernah ragu dalam membunuh, dia tetap merasa ngeri dengan gilanya Jerome). Tahun depan adalah seri terakhir (dan saya dengar Bane juga akan muncul). Mari kita nantikan kemunculan perdana Batman!
