Collectible Cars

There are things that I always see but never noticed before and as of now, there's no greater example than the die-cast collectible cars. I'm never a car person. I don't recall having any memorable car toys except the Batmobile. I don't play racing games other than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe recently and I don't watch any racing movies, be it Initial D, Cars, the Fast and the Furious series or anything else. But now that we had our high school alumni chat group, the topic about the miniature cars would crop up from time to time, thanks to AW and BL. Slowly but sure, it piqued my curiosity. What on earth that was actually so exciting about this? I just had to ask.

Every hobby had its origin. For AW, only God knows why he passed by the toy section when he was doing his monthly grocery shopping, but it was there that he saw a funny looking car with big rear tyres and he felt like buying that. For BL, he was just getting one, Kinsmart's Shelby Cobra 427, to complement his bride-and-groom wedding cake topper. The end result was the same for both of them. What was supposed to be a one-time purchase became an interest that they pursue until now.

The die-cast collectible cars has a wide range of brands. The one mentioned earlier was Kinsmart. There are other names such as Jada Toys, Matchbox, Majorette, Johnny Lightning and many more, but ones that seem to be their favorites are Hot Wheels and Tomica. They explained to me that if I'd like to go for Japanese cars, Tomica would be my choice. Hot Wheels, on the other hand, has a great selection of American cars.

I thought that would be simple enough to understand, but things went crazily complicated right after this. They told me that there are many series for Tomica, from regular, premium, AEON, TLVN for vintage collection, Dream series (this series has all the cute-shaped cars such as Hello Kitty, Tsum Tsum, etc.) and who knows what else. Hot Wheels also has its own categories such as Redline or Real Riders. 

Now, with each category comes each price tag. Some, especially the regular series, will set the proud owner back roughly around IDR 30K for Hot Wheels and IDR 80K for Tomica. The price will get higher when it is a collector's item (those that comes with labels such as limited edition or vintage edition are usually bad for wallets). In a way, it's a rather affordable hobby if one doesn't go over the top.

Having said that, it's also worth noting that most of the collectors, at least in Indonesia, are working adults rather than kids. They have their own communities, they attend events, such as Indonesia Diecast Expo and buy their cars either at toy stores or via online markets like Tokopedia. BL did a purchase from eBay before, but he explained to me that since the craze has been booming in Indonesia and the collectors are spoiled with extensive choices domestically, there is no point buying from overseas.

Since I wasn't a fan, I was wondering how the hobbyist actually enjoyed the collection. I mean, they surely wouldn't go pushing the cars on the floor like kids, right? It turned out that the most practical way was to keep them on the display case that was hanging on the wall. Apart from that, AW had attempted diorama photography. Koleksi Mobil-Mobilan

Ada banyak hal yang sering saya lihat tetapi tidak pernah saya amati. Contoh yang paling akurat untuk kesempatan ini adalah mobil-mobilan. Saya bukanlah pencinta mobil sehingga tidak memiliki mobil-mobilan di masa kecil kecuali Batmobile. Saya juga tidak bermain game balap mobil selain Mario Kart 8 Deluxe baru-baru ini. Film yang bertema mobil, mulai dari Initial D, Cars serta serial the Fast and the Furious pun tidak menarik perhatian saya. Akan tetapi topik mobil miniatur ini terkadang muncul di grup WhatsApp khusus alumni sekolah. AW dan BL yang memiliki hobi serupa ini kadang membahasnya. Lambat laun saya jadi penasaran, apa sebenarnya yang menarik dari koleksi ini? Maka saya pun bertanya. 

Setiap hobi memiliki asal mula. Untuk AW, hanya Tuhan yang tahu kenapa dia tiba-tiba melewati bagian mainan padahal saat itu dia sedang belanja bulanan, namun di situlah dia pertama kalinya melihat mobil mungil dengan roda belakang yang besar dan menarik perhatiannya. Akan halnya BL, dia iseng membeli satu, mobil Shelby Cobra 427 produksi Kinsmart, untuk melengkapi patung pengantin yang menghiasi kue pernikahannya. Hasilnya akhirnya ternyata sama bagi mereka berdua. Apa yang mereka beli pada saat itu menjadi koleksi pertama dari hobi yang mereka tekuni hingga hari ini.

Mobil-mobilan ini memiliki banyak merek. Yang pertama disebutkan tadi adalah Kinsmart. Masih ada lagi merek lainnya seperti Jada Toys, Matchbox, Majorette, Johnny Lightning dan lain-lain, namun yang sering mereka bicarakan adalah Hot Wheels and Tomica. Mereka menjelaskan pada saya bahwa jika saya ingin mengumpulkan mobil dan motor Jepang, Tomica adalah pilihan yang tepat. Hot Wheels memiliki lebih banyak koleksi mobil Amerika.

Sampai di sini, penjelasan mereka mudah dimengerti. Namun mereka berbicara lebih jauh lagi tentang dua merek ini. Mereka bercerita bahwa Tomica memiliki banyak seri, mulai dari yang biasa, yang premium, AEON, TLVN untuk versi kendaraan klasik jaman dulu, edisi Dream yang menampilkan mobil-mobil lucu seperti Hello Kitty, Tsum Tsum dan berbagai variasi lainnya. Hot Wheels juga memiliki kategori tersendiri, misalnya Redline atau Real Riders. Bukan main!

Setiap kategori memiliki harga tersendiri. Kategori biasa berada dalam kisaran harga Rp. 30.000 untuk Hot Wheels dan Rp. 80.000 untuk Tomica. Harga akan melambung tinggi jika mobil yang dicari adalah edisi koleksi (biasanya yang ada tulisan limited edition atau vintage edition adalah kabar buruk dan tidak baik untuk kesehatan dompet). Kendati begitu, hobi ini bisa dikatakan cukup terjangkau apabila kita tidak berlebihan dalam berburu koleksi.

Menarik untuk dicatat bahwa para kolektor ini lebih cenderung berasal dari kalangan dewasa dan bukannya anak kecil. Para penggemar mobil-mobilan ini memiliki komunitas tersendiri. Mereka bahkan memiliki rangkaian acara tahunan, contohnya Indonesia Diecast Expo. Koleksi mereka ini berasal dari toko mainan dan juga transaksi lewat internet, misalnya melalui Tokopedia. BL pernah membeli dari eBay, namun dia berpendapat bahwa seiringan dengan semakin semaraknya minat dan pasaran di Indonesia, koleksi yang ditawarkan pun semakin beraneka ragam sehingga tidak perlu lagi membeli dari luar negeri. 

Hal terakhir yang membuat saya ingin tahu adalah bagaimana para kolektor ini menikmati koleksi mereka. Mereka tentunya tidak akan bermain mobil-mobilan di lantai seperti anak-anak, bukan? Menurut dua orang penggemar ini, hal yang paling lazim dilakukan adalah menyimpan mobil-mobilan ini dalam rak khusus yang transparan dan digantung di dinding. Proses menata dan mengagumi koleksi ini memberi kepuasan tersendiri. Selain itu, AW bahkan mencoba fotografi diorama dan juga membongkar serta merancang ulang mobilnya. Kalau BL lebih memilih untuk menjadi pembawa acara khusus buka bungkus dan aktivitas lain seputar hobi mobil-mobilan ini.
