The Cloud

It was just four years ago when I wrote about Apple's Time Capsule. I always liked how it combined Wi-Fi and storage because it allowed me to back up the data wirelessly. I first used it in 2012 and I refreshed the hardware in 2017. Little did I know that it'd be discontinued a year later. 

Now, four years down the road, as the hardware aged, I was wondering what the replacement would be. Apple's Time Capsule had been great for an era where you actually spent time to back up your document, videos and photos to an external hard disk. But this wasn't good enough now. The fact that the data was only accessible from home network also started to feel like a restriction. There had to be a simpler way for data management. 

The answer turned out to be a cloud storage called Google One. Yes, the solution had been around for a while, so it should be matured enough by now. It also integrated really well with Google Photos and the back up process was seamless. At the promo price of SGD 1.39 per month for six months (usual price was SGD 2.79/month for 100GB), it was reasonably cheap. In fact, as a Google Pixel user, I was entitled for free trial until June. It was convenient to have the data accessible from anywhere. On top of that, I didn't need to worry about hardware failure and hardware refresh anymore. 

After the consideration above, I was convinced that I should move the data to the cloud. The process was quite straightforward, but I still got confused by the different technologies involved here, haha. Photos on the phone were backed up by Google Photos, but older ones from Apple's Time Capsule were treated like files and therefore went to cloud via Google Drive. These files wouldn't flow automatically into Google Photos. 

Now that the photos were on the cloud, it was time to do something about the collection. When I visited Franky's house in July 2020 (yeah, I knew the date because I used Swarm), he showed me this little gadget called Google Nest Hub. It was an over-glorified photo frame powered by Google and I couldn't be bothered with it then. But now, as I switched to Google One, it did feel like something I could use.

The result was something I hadn't seen in a long while. You see, we often took a lot of pictures and backed them up, hoping we'd see them again one day, but how often would we actually make time to browse through the collection? With Google Nest Hub, the photos we selected (I chose those with my wife and kids) were displayed automatically for us. It was good to see the old pictures again. Those happy memories were suddenly no longer hidden. They were there, right in front of me to cherish them...

Empat tahun silam, saya menulis tentang produk Apple yang bernama Time Capsule. Saya menyukai teknologinya yang menggabungkan Wi-Fi dan harddisk, sebab saya jadi bisa menyimpan data secara nirkabel. Saya pertama kali menggunakan Time Capsule di tahun 2012 dan lima tahun kemudian, saya membeli lagi produk serupa sebagai upaya peremajaan perangkat keras. Tidak saya sangka bahwa setahun kemudian Apple mengumumkan bahwa produk ini telah berakhir masa produksinya.

Sekarang, seiring dengan bertambahnya umur Time Capsule yang saya gunakan, saya mulai memikirkan apa gantinya. Time Capsule sangat praktis untuk digunakan di masa dimana kita meluangkan waktu untuk menyimpan dokumen, video dan foto ke harddisk eksternal. Namun ini tidak lagi relevan sekarang. Selain itu, fakta bahwa data hanya bisa diakses di rumah mulai terasa seperti keterbatasan. Harusnya ada cara yang lebih praktis dalam manajemen data. 

Jawabannya adalah penyimpanan data di cloud yang bernama Google One. Ya, solusi ini sudah beredar beberapa waktu lamanya, tapi seharusnya sudah cukup matang sekarang. Produk ini juga terintegrasi dengan Google Photos sehingga proses penyimpanan datanya sangat mulus. Dengan harga promo sekitar 15 ribu rupiah per bulan untuk jangka waktu enam bulan (harga resminya adalah IDR 30 ribu per bulan untuk kuota sebesar 100GB), biaya ini tergolong murah. Sebagai pengguna Google Pixel, saya juga mendapatkan masa uji coba gratis hingga bulan Juni. Praktis rasanya bisa mengakses data dari mana pun. Yang lebih menarik lagi, kini saya tidak perlu khawatir dengan resiko rusaknya perangkat keras bila tidak diganti baru setelah dipakai selama lima tahun.  

Dengan pertimbangan di atas, saya akhirnya yakin untuk memindahkan data ke cloud. Prosesnya cukup gampang, tapi saya sempat bingung dengan teknologi berbeda yang digunakan dalam proses pemindahan data, haha. Foto di telepon genggam kita langsung diunggah oleh Google Photos, tapi foto-foto lama dari Time Capsule itu tidak ubahnya seperti file biasa dan harus dipindahkan lewat Google Drive. Foto-foto ini tidak akan berpindah secara otomatis ke Google Photos. 

Nah, setelah koleksi foto tersimpan di cloud, tiba waktunya untuk melakukan sesuatu. Ketika saya mengunjungi rumah Franky di bulan Juli 2020 (saya tahu persis tanggalnya karena saya menggunakan Swarm), dia menunjukkan sebuah perangkat kecil yang disebut Google Nest Hub pada saya. Ini adalah bingkai foto yang berbasis Google dan di waktu itu, saya merasa tidak butuh. Sekarang, setelah pindah ke Google One, tiba-tiba saja bingkai foto ini terasa masuk akal untuk digunakan. 

Kalau anda pikirkan kembali, seringkali kita mengambil foto dan menyimpannya di harddisk eksternal supaya kita bisa melihatnya kembali suatu hari nanti. Kenyataannya, seberapa sering kita melihat kembali koleksi foto tersebut? Dengan Google Nest Hub, foto yang kita pilih (saya tampilkan semua yang ada istri dan anak-anak saya) akan muncul secara otomatis. Senang rasanya bisa melihat foto-foto lama. Semua kenangan akhirnya tidak lagi tersembunyi, melainkan muncul di meja kerja dan membawa saya bernostalgia...
