Through The Looking Glass

This story began with a really bad news for BlackBerry fans like me: OnwardMobility, a company that promised to deliver a 5G BlackBerry phone, decided to fold. I was so disappointed. The last hope for BlackBerry's revival was gone!

I had been sticking with Titan Pocket, the BlackBerry wannabe, since October 2021 while patiently waiting for the real deal to return. Since it wasn't going to happen and the dream was over, I switched to my favourite back-up plan: Google Pixel. It was no secret that I loathed the subpar camera of Titan Pocket, especially when I took pictures at night. With that in mind, if I were to change my phone, I knew I had to go for the best one there was.

In the meantime, I'd been doing my Strava time for a while. I enjoyed the activity and I would, from time to time, take the pictures of the nice views that I saw. The result taken with Titan Pocket thus far was never that nice. The color was so dull, it was laughable. But that was I had and after five months, the poor quality became a norm to me.

A picture from one fine afternoon.

Imagine my surprise when I took one with Google Pixel 6 in one late afternoon, as I passed by the pub where I once had a drink with Endrico and Ardian. It was spontaneous and effortless, as I just simply snapped it as I walked, but yet the photo was so gorgeous. It looked unbelievably zen that it somehow reminded me of the Carpenters' song: "and when the evening comes, we smile..."

Later on that night, I took another picture. It was actually quite dark, but the result was still something pretty amazing. It had just the right amount of brightness and vivid color. I liked what I saw and I wished to share them as well. That's when I thought of posting at most four pictures for each Strava time!

And when the evening came.

The idea was to show the many sides of Singapore that really caught my eyes. My Strava time had given me chances to explore the sides of Singapore I hadn't seen before. It also allowed me to connect the dots. One example that happened recently was Tanglin Road. Just realized that it led to Alexandra Road, which was quite a walking distance from Orchard. I enjoyed discovering parts of the city that I never knew before and got me saying, "oohhh."

I loved the fact that Singapore was not only beautiful and clean, but also so thoughtfully and thoroughly developed. On top of that, it still had its fair share of surprises. Oh yes, I even bumped into a group of boarlets in Hillview! And as excited as I was to see them roaming in the city, I detoured a bit and avoided them, haha.

Singapore was the sum of many things: the green hills, the lush parks, cultural places, the skyscrapers in the CBD areas, etc. But what did I like the most? I liked it best when the water, the bright blue sky, the greeneries and the high-rise buildings blended seamlessly in one beautiful landscape. Love capturing it through the looking glass of Google Pixel!

PS: this story was still written using BlackBerry Key2. The great feeling of typing on it was still irreplaceable!

Lewat Lensa Kamera

Cerita kali ini dimulai dari kabar buruk bagi penggemar BlackBerry seperti saya: OnwardMobility, sebuah perusahaan Amerika yang menjanjikan BlackBerry 5G, mendadak gulung tikar di bulan Februari. Saya sungguh merasa kecewa. Kebangkitan BlackBerry yang saya tunggu-tunggu mendadak sirna begitu saja.

Saya telah dengan sabar menggunakan imitasi BlackBerry yang bernama Titan Pocket sejak October 2021 sambil menantikan peluncuran BlackBerry terbaru. Ketika impian ini buyar, saya akhirnya mengeksekusi rencana cadangan saya: Google Pixel. Bukan rahasia lagi kalau saya tidak suka dengan hasil jepretan Titan Pocket, apalagi di malam hari. Berbekal ketidakpuasan ini di benak saya, saya ingin menggunakan kamera telepon Android terbaik bila saya membeli yang baru. 

Di saat yang sama, saya juga sudah menekuni rutinitas Strava untuk beberapa bulan lamanya. Saya menikmati aktivitas ini dan dari waktu ke waktu, saya suka mengambil foto pemandangan yang saya temui. Sejauh ini, foto Titan Pocket tidak bagus dan seperti luntur warnanya. Akan tetapi selama lima bulan terakhir, hanya itu yang saya punya dan lambat-laun saya jadi terbiasa melihat kualitas fotonya yang buruk.

Bayangkan betapa terkejutnya saya ketika saya dengan iseng memotret dengan Google Pixel 6 di suatu senja saat saya sedang Strava dan melewati tempat di mana saya, Endrico dan Ardian pernah minum bersama dulu. Aksi saya ini spontan dan saya mengambil gambar selagi berjalan, namun tak disangka bahwa fotonya terlihat memikat. Fotonya tampak begitu tenang dan damai, mengingatkan saya pada lirik lagu Carpenters: "and when the evening comes, we smile..."

Di malam yang sama, saya kembali memotret. Saat itu sebenarnya cukup gelap, tapi hasil fotonya masih sangat mengesankan. Pencahayaannya cukup dan warnanya pun menonjol. Saya suka dengan apa yang saya lihat dan jadi ingin membagikannya di media sosial. Di saat itulah saya jadi berpikir untuk mengunggah maksimal empat foto setiap kali saya Strava. 

Ketika malam tiba. 

Foto-foto ini menampilkan sisi kota Singapura yang menarik perhatian saya. Aktivitas Strava memberikan saya kesempatan untuk menjelajahi bagian Singapura yang belum pernah saya lihat sebelumnya. Saya juga akhirnya jadi tahu setiap sudut kota. Sebagai contoh, Tanglin Road. Selama ini saya hanya tahu bahwa kawasan Tanglin itu di dekat Orchard, namun baru-baru ini saya temukan bahwa jalan ini mengarah ke Alexandra Road. Ada rasa kepuasan tersendiri saat tahu bahwa, "ohh, ternyata tembus ke sini."  

Eksplorasi ini mengingatkan saya kembali bahwa Singapura bukan hanya sebuah kota yang indah dan bersih, tapi juga dibangun dengan perencanaan yang matang di setiap jengkalnya. Meskipun demikian, kota ini masih saja menyimpan kejutan. Oh ya, saya bahkan sempat berpapasan dengan tiga ekor babi hutan di daerah Hillview! Melihat binatang liar di tengah kota adalah suatu pengalaman unik, meskipun saya harus memutar sedikit lebih jauh supaya aman, haha.

Singkat kata, Singapura ada perpaduan dari banyak pemandangan, mulai dari bukit yang hijau, taman yang rindang, aneka tempat budaya sampai pencakar langit di daerah perkantoran dan lain-lain. Tapi apa yang paling saya sukai? Pemandangan favorit saya adalah aliran air, langit biru, hijaunya daun dan gedung-gedung tinggi yang menyatu menjadi satu pemandangan yang indah dan rapi. Saya suka melihat dan mengabadikannya dari balik lensa Google Pixel!
