Starr Time!

Many of us have our own favorite group band, but do we actually know who the drummer is? Now, if I change the question a bit, do we ever notice the man behind the drum kit and think that the guy really rocks? Unless you are a fellow drummer, chances are you don't really care who that guy is. Drummer is such an obscure role that is often overshadowed by others such as lead vocalist or guitarist. For example, how many of us here ever heard of Buddy Rich?

The fate of drummers would have stayed that way if not for Ringo Starr. Say all you like about his drumming skills, but it's not going to change the fact that he was there on a raised platform, playing drums with the most popular band in the world. For the first time ever, a drummer was seen by the world, not as a guy who made some noise at the back, but as an equal in a band. On top of that, there was Starr Time where Ringo would perform his one song quota per concert while sitting behind his kit and maintaining the beat. Thanks to Ringo, suddenly a drummer was cool. He paved the way for many after him. I think it's safe to that after Ringo hit the big time, people started paying attention to the likes of Charlie Watts, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, etc.

Oh, just in case you still have no idea whom I was talking about, he was Ringo Starr of the Beatles. The group had disbanded almost 50 years ago, but that turned out to be fine, because being an ex-Beatle is like having a really high privilege in music world, perhaps only one rank below the King of Rock n' Roll. While there used to be four of them, now we have only two left, so yeah, it's really a big deal. But that royal title aside, it was the man himself that inspired many of us, including your truly.

The thing with the Beatles is, while the four members are equally charming, there are always moments in life when you feel that you can relate with one better than the other. With Ringo, it's always his good nature that is endearing. He's smart, funny, confident and yet humble at the same time, knowing well that he's an ex-Beatle, but comfortable enough to be himself. I'm not just saying it because I am a fan. You can always check it out on YouTube, just search for his interviews, be it with Ellen Degeneres or other talk show hosts.

In Liverpool, drumming 101 with Ringo!

Back in the days, when he was riding high on the toppermost of the poppermost, he sang stuff like Act Naturally and With a Little Help from My Friends. Coming from him, not only the lyrics sounded very convincing, but they also meant a lot to his fans. He's not multi-talented like his bandmate Paul McCartney, but perhaps he doesn't have to, for he certainly gets by with a little help from his friends.

I tend to think that only the Beatles could bring out his best in drumming, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have a good solo career. Time Takes Time, my first Ringo album, is my favorite. I found the cassette in Kenyalang, Kuching, when I visited the city with Parno (I think the guide was Jimmy, because Endrico failed to appear until much later on). The album opens with Weight of the World, a good song with delicious drumming and brilliant lyrics (totally love these lines: Maybe I haven't always been there just for you; Maybe I try but then I got my own life, too), definitely an album with all killers and no fillers. VH1 Storytellers is also another favorite. This was Ringo playing live in an intimate environment, where he also told the story behind each song in a relaxed and humorous manner. Very lovely, very underrated recording.

Weight of the World - Time Takes Time.

And at age 77, Ringo still shows no sign of retiring. His new album, Give More Love, will be released soon on September 15, 2017.  I've pre-ordered mine, of course, haha. Based on his recent outputs, I have doubts that it will be a chart topping album, but I don't think that's really relevant here. What we'll get for sure is another Ringo album, one where we can listen to his love for rock n' roll and the fun he had while he was making it. Peace and love!

Banyak dari kita yang memiliki grup band favorit, tapi kenalkah kita yang dengan pemain drumnya? Kalau saya ganti pertanyaannya sedikit, apa pernah kita memperhatikan pemain yang duduk di belakang drum ini dan berpikir bahwa orang ini memang handal? Rasanya hanya sedikit yang peduli. Penabuh drum itu profesi yang seringkali kalah pamor dari anggota band lainnya, misalnya vokalis atau gitaris. Sebagai contoh, seberapa banyak yang kenal dengan Buddy Rich?

Jika bukan karena Ringo Starr, mungkin para pemain drum akan selamanya tidak dikenal. Orang bisa berpendapat apa saja tentang kemampuan Ringo, tapi itu tidak akan mengubah fakta bahwa dia duduk di atas panggung yang tinggi, bermain drum bersama grup paling populer di dunia. Ketika Ringo tampil, untuk pertama kalinya dunia menyaksikan seorang pemain drum, bukan sebagai pembuat gaduh di belakang, tetapi anggota dari sebuah band. Yang lebih unik lagi, Ringo memiliki kuota satu lagu per konser, dimana ia bernyanyi sambil memainkan drum. Berkat Ringo, drummer akhirnya menjadi profesi yang bergengsi. Dia membuka jalan bagi para penabuh drum yang muncul belakangan. Ketika Ringo sukses, para penonton pun mulai memperhatikan pemain lain seperti Charlie Watts, Keith Moon atau Ginger Baker.

Oh, kalau anda masih belum mengerti siapa yang saya maksudkan di sini, dia adalah Ringo Starr dari the Beatles. Grup ini sudah bubar hampir 50 tahun yang lalu, tapi hasil akhirnya tetap saja positif, sebagai menjadi ex-Beatle itu memiliki nilai tersendiri di dunia musik, mungkin posisinya hanya satu tingkat di bawah Raja Rock n' Roll. Dulunya ada empat mantan Beatles di dunia ini, namun sekarang hanya tersisa dua, jadi, benar-benar langka. Meski begitu, yang benar-benar penting adalah bagaimana Ringo memberikan inspirasi pada begitu banyak orang, termasuk saya.  

Yang menarik untuk dicatat tentang the Beatles adalah, walau keempat anggotanya memiliki daya tarik masing-masing, selalu saja ada saat di dalam hidup di mana seorang penggemar merasa lebih dekat dengan yang satu daripada yang lain. Bicara tentang Ringo, dia pintar, lucu dan percaya diri, tetapi juga rendah hati. Dia jelas paham posisi pentingnya sebagai seorang ex-Beatle, tetapi dia juga cukup santai untuk menjadi dirinya sendiri. Saya tidak berkata seperti ini hanya karena saya adalah seorang penggemar. Bertahun-tahun silam, ketika dia masih menjadi anggota the Beatles, dia menyanyikan lagu-lagu seperti Act Naturally dan With a Little Help from My Friends. Karena dia adalah Ringo, lirik yang dinyanyikannya bukan saja terdengar meyakinkan, tetapi juga sangat berarti bagi para penggemarnya. Perlu dipahami bahwa dia hanya seorang pemain drum dan bukan musisi yang paling berbakat seperti rekannya, Paul McCartney, tapi justru karena itulah With a Little Help from My Friends menjadi masuk akal.

Saya sering merasa bahwa hanya the Beatles yang memberikan cukup tantangan baginya untuk memberikan permainan drum terbaik, tetapi itu tidak berarti dia mempunyai karir yang bagus ketika the Beatles bubar. Time Takes Time, album Ringo saya yang pertama, adalah album favorit saya juga. Saya menemukan kasetnya di Kenyalang, Kuching, ketika saya mengunjungi kota tersebut bersama Parno (kalau tidak salah ingat, saat itu yang menemani kita adalah Jimmy, sebab Endrico baru muncul setelah malam tiba). Album ini mulai dengan Weight of the World, lagu bagus dengan permainan drums yang cantik dan lirik yang cerdas (saya suka bagian ini: Maybe I haven't always been there just for you; Maybe I try but then I got my own life, too), benar-benar album dengan lagu-lagu yang terseleksi dengan baik. Album lainnya, VH1 Storytellers, juga album yang menarik. Ringo tampil di pentas yang dekat dengan penonton dan dia berkisah tentang cerita yang melatarbelakangi lagu yang dimainkannya. 

Dan di usianya yang ke-77, Ringo masih belum menunjukkan tanda-tanda akan pensiun. Album barunya, Give More Love, akan segera dirilis tanggal 15 September ini. Saya sudah memesan satu dari amazon.com, haha. Ditinjau dari beberapa album terakhirnya, saya tidak yakin bahwa ini akan menjadi album nomor satu, tapi saya rasa ini tidaklah relevan. Yang bisa saya pastikan adalah, kita akan mendapatkan sebuah album Ringo, dimana kita bisa mendengarkan kecintaannya pada rock n' roll dan kegembiraan yang ia rasakan selama pembuatan albumnya. Seperti kata Ringo, peace and love!
