The Animals

First of all, no, this is not about Eric Burdon's band, the one that performed the House of the Rising Sun. This is about the animals, literally. A cousin of mine got sick of politics (social media is full of it these days!) and he asked why nobody talked about fish and rhino instead. I always find this sort of incoherent statement interesting, so I responded to his comment by saying that perhaps we should save Sumatran rhinos. That innocent thought never left my head since then, as if it begged to be told, so here we are.

I've always been fascinated by the animals. My first recollection about the wildlife was a tune called Baby Elephant Walk and baby elephants holding tails, likely a scene from this old movie called Hatari! When I was a little boy, I always had bedtime stories about elephant, hippo, giraffe and zebra; read and repeated by Mum almost every night. Then I had a visit or two to Pontianak Zoo. I remember the bear pit, where we had to climb to the top to look at the bears down there. My grandparents also kept ducks and chickens. This gave me the opportunity to pick up eggs every morning (once there was a python instead of a hen in the cage, as the poor fowl had been swallowed by the snake). Growing up, I also had turtle pets, from a Malayan box turtle, a spiny turtle to red eared sliders. Why turtles? Well, I'm always curious about who'll last longer, the owner or the pet.

My pet, Markus. She's 11 years old this year.

The good thing of being a grown-up is, I now have the means to pursue my childhood interest. Always a keen zoo visitor, I went to many throughout the years, from Jakarta to Tokyo. African elephant, Indian rhino and gorilla had been struck off my wishlist so far. I also had a chance to see these strange looking beasts called takin and aardvark. Oh, I heard the big cats growling for the first time at Guangzhou Zoo, too. It was loud, even though I was nowhere near the cage. Imagine if they roared!

What I'm saying is, apart from the safari park where the animals roam freely, the zoo visit is the closest encounter with the wildlife that one can experience. Some may complain about how smelly a zoo can be, but if you just stand there and stare at, for example, the elephants, you'll realize how majestic these gentle giants are. Crocodiles are another great example. For the fact that they'll give you goosebumps by just floating eerily still on water, you'll have nothing but respect. This is certainly a force to be reckoned with.

As I grew to appreciate the creatures we are sharing this world with, it dawned on me that the reality isn't as rosy as what I imagined before. As a kid, I used to think that the animals were always around, but as I watch and read more about it, I realize that it isn't the case. Many have been wiped out since then. We can only guess now what the animals described by people from the past were. They were once there, I believe, but are no longer around. It's ironic that the dodo is still used as the mascot of Mauritius when the bird had been extinct roughly 400 years ago. Steller's sea cow was another sad story. More recent cases, animals that were ever captured on photos, were quagga and Tasmanian tiger. The list goes on and on.

The extinction that I was fully aware of was the death of Lonesome George, a male giant tortoise from Pinta Island. I actually read about it and followed the news. I was happy when the mating attempts produced eggs. I was sad when the eggs were inviable. Then came the bad news that George had died. Prior to that, George was already portrayed on TV ads as the rarest creature in the world as it was the last of its kind. The day George died, I remember having a hard time digesting the information. I was stunned by the fact that the entire species died with George, that we are not going to see the likes of it anymore. That's what extinction really means.

The Sumatran rhino.

This brings us back to the Sumatran Rhino. I didn't mention the particular species for no apparent reason. I like rhinos in general, but Sumatran rhinos are special in the sense that they are the one and only hairy rhinos that still walk the earth. When I manage to keep aside some money, I donate it to WWF as a form of support. That's the least I can do for now. If you ask me, I'm just trying my best to avoid the need of explaining to the next generation, what this animal is and why they are no more. My right to see animals such as elephant bird has been denied forever and I have to accept that, but if you and I play our parts, the future generations may not need to suffer the same fate. We owe it to ourselves to do it right, really.

Now, instead of ending this on a somber note, let me share with you what's next for me. I'd like to do whale watching. I saw beluga before and it was cute, but it doesn't count! I'd like to see the big ones. Another dream that I have is Africa (and, no, it's not the song by Toto). Serengeti and Maasai Mara, we'll meet one day...

Tentang Binatang

That story book about giraffe and zebra. I still remember the exact title!
