The Third Option

I always have a soft spot for Chromebook. It's like, in the world dominated by Windows and Mac, it's good to have an alternative. More ofen than not, Windows is the default operating system for many of us. Mac is the fancy one, a very elegant piece of technology to behold and play with. Yes, both are great in their own ways, but one is not exactly cheap and the other is known to be pricey.

I bought my first Chromebook in July 2014, roughly three years after it was first launched. I remember trying it out as a substitute for MacBook, but it was a far cry from what I had in mind. The early Chromebook came with a small storage space as it was meant to work seamlessly with data on cloud, but the cloud technology itself was still in its infancy then (Google Drive was only introduced in 2012). The whole concept felt alien, resulting in a impression that without internet, the Chromebook was practically useless. 

I eventually gave it to my brother for browsing purpose as he didn't have an iPad at that time. Now that I looked back, if the whole Chromebook idea didn't work in Singapore, it definitely fared much worse in Pontianak, haha.

Fast forward to 2021, it was a different time now. As the technology was way more mature than before, cloud computing almost became a norm these days. Then of course there was COVID-19 that forced many of us to do our activities from home. In my case, that included my wife and daughter recently. As both needed to study, suddenly one MacBook Air was no longer sufficient.

If I had to get a second computer, I reckon it shouldn't be a Mac anymore. I also disliked the idea of getting another laptop, therefore I was contemplating whether I should get a Surface Go 2 or not. The price did look attractive, but it turned out that the spec was below par. If I beefed it up, I'd end up paying more than a new MacBook, which didn't make sense, because Apple was supposed to be the premium one here.

That's when I revisited Chromebook again and found this Lenovo product called Ideapad Duet. It was a solidly built tablet that came with a detachable keyboard and a cover that could be used as a kickstand. It also had a decent price tag for a Chromebook. I really like what I saw and I bought it for my daughter so she could use it as a laptop for home-based learning. Just to clarify here, I didn't want a laptop, but I wanted a tablet that looked like one, haha.

Anyway, Chrome OS had changed a lot since I last used it, but the most brilliant enhancement was the integration with Android. By allowing Chromebook to access Google Play Store, I could install most of the things my daughter needed such as Office 365 and all the Google stuff, i.e. Gmail, Google Translate, etc. Zoom was surprisingly missing from Play Store, but could be found on Chrome Web Store. In short, I could have all the required applications on Chromebook.

One last thing, the login required a Google ID. I created one for my daughter a while ago and it did have some sort of parental control. Things she could access were based on her age and anything she'd like to install had to be approved by her parents. 

Overall, it was a good buy. Chromebook was no longer a computer that simply didn't work when there was no internet. Everything had finally fallen into place for Chromebook to function properly. To a certain extent, it simply works! Recommended!

Pilihan Ketiga

Chromebook selalu menarik perhatian saya karena keunikannya. Di dunia yang didominasi oleh Windows dan Mac, keberadaannya merupakan sebuah alternatif. Sering kali Windows menjadi pilihan utama bagi kita karena sistem inilah yang digunakan oleh khalayak ramai. Di sisi lain, Mac adalah teknologi yang dikemas dengan elegan dan sedap dipandang. Dua-duanya memiliki keunggulan tersendiri, tapi yang satu tidaklah murah dan yang lainnya terkenal mahal. 

Saya membeli Chromebook pertama saya di bulan Juli 2014, kira-kira tiga tahun setelah Chrome OS dirilis. Saya ingat saat saya mencoba Chromebook sebagai pengganti MacBook, tapi apa yang saya tes ini masih jauh dari harapan. Chromebook pada masa ini memiliki tempat penyimpanan data yang kecil karena teknologinya dirancang untuk bekerja dengan data di cloud, tapi teknologi cloud sendiri masih tergolong baru pada saat itu (Google Drive pertama kali diluncurkan pada tahun 2012). Konsepnya masih terasa asing. Kesan yang saya rasakan waktu itu adalah, tanpa internet, Chromebook ini sama sekali tidak berguna. 

Akhirnya saya berikan Chromebook kepada saudara saya sebagai sarana untuk menggunakan internet karena dia tidak memiliki iPad di kala itu. Kalau saya lihat kembali sekarang, jika ide di balik Chromebook tidak bisa diterapkan di Singapura, tentunya produk ini lebih gagal lagi di Pontianak, haha.

Kembali ke tahun 2021, ini adalah masa yang sama sekali berbeda. Teknologi sudah jauh lebih matang dan cloud mulai diterima secara meluas. Kemudian ada pula wabah COVID-19 yang memaksa kita untuk beraktivitas di rumah. Bagi saya pribadi, dampaknya mencakup istri dan anak saya. Karena dua-duanya perlu menggunakan komputer untuk belajar, tiba-tiba satu MacBook Air tak lagi memadai.

Jika saya harus membeli komputer baru, aneh rasanya kalau saya membeli Mac lagi. Saya juga tidak ingin membeli laptop lagi, jadi saya sempat berpikir untuk menjajal Surface Go 2 yang berbasis Windows. Harganya terlihat menarik, tapi ternyata spesifikasinya di bawah rata-rata. Jika saya upgrade, harganya jadi lebih mahal dari MacBook. Ini terasa tidak masuk akal, soalnya produk Apple yang biasanya lebih premium. 

Jadi saya pun melihat Chromebook kembali dan saya temukan produk Lenovo yang bernama Ideapad Duet. Piranti keras ini berbentuk tablet dan datang bersama keyboard serta cover yang juga bisa dipakai sebagai sandaran. Harganya pun standar untuk Chromebook. Saya suka dengan apa yang saya lihat, jadi saya beli sebagai sarana bagi putri saya untuk belajar di rumah. Sekedar penjelasan bagi yang heran, saya tidak ingin membeli laptop, tapi saya mau tablet yang bisa dibentuk menjadi laptop, haha.

Setelah saya kutak-katik, saya menemukan bahwa Chrome OS sudah berubah drastis sejak terakhir kali saya gunakan. Terobosan yang paling cerdas adalah integrasi Chrome OS dan Android yang akhirnya memberikan pengguna akses ke Google Play Store. Saya jadi bisa menginstal aplikasi yang dibutuhkan putri saya, misalnya Office 365 dan produk Google lainnya seperti Gmail dan Google Translate. Zoom tidak ditemukan di Play Store, tapi bisa diinstal dari Chrome Web Store. 

Satu hal terakhir, untuk login dibutuhkan Google ID. Saya sudah membuat login untuk putri saya beberapa waktu yang lalu dan login ini memberikan semacam pengawasan kepada orang tua. Usia menjadi patokan untuk apa yang bisa diakses olehnya dan apa yang hendak dia instal harus mendapat ijin dari orang tua. 

Secara keseluruhan, ini adalah produk yang bagus untuk dibeli. Chromebook tak lagi merupakan komputer yang tak bisa dipakai bila tidak memiliki akses internet. Kemajuan zaman membuat Chromebook dan cloud bisa digunakan setidaknya untuk keperluan sekolah. Bila anda berminat, anda bisa mencobanya juga.
