Fight Back To School

Looking back, I believe I did know to a certain extent that Asterix was originally a comic written in French. However, the language was so rarely spoken in Pontianak that the only exposure I had up till the 90s was comment allez-vous. It was a joke in Stephen Chow's God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai. 

The next exposure of French language would come from my friend Parno. During the presentation of his final paper in English, Parno replied to the lecturer with a confidence only he would have, "I don't know the answer in English, but I know how to phrase it in French." His reply was so hilarious and stunning at the same time. The fellow students burst into laughter while the lecturer was caught by surprise and didn't exactly know how to react to this unexpected response.

Since that moment onward, only Parno would speak French from time to time. When we wrote a rap song called Everyday I Go To School, he threw in je ne sais pas in a tone that sounded humorous. Then of course there was this favorite word of his: j'adore. It was so memorable and closely associated to him that I actually stopped and took the picture when I saw the word on a Dior advertisement in Paris.

It was only when I moved to Singapore that I heard of French more frequently than before. I couldn't help noticing that there were a lot of French people in the trading industry. They were literally everywhere. I remember telling my friend Keenan during our lunch at Bonchon Chicken that perhaps we should pick up French, too.

That was in 2019 and I was toying with the idea of learning French from that moment on. COVID-19 came not long after that and went away earlier this year, but the idea lingered. A few months ago, when I met a French of Lao origin, I mentioned that I had always wanted to learn French. The name Alliance Française popped up, I checked it out and I enrolled myself. And I was a student again for the first time in forever. I took the Mandarin class when I was living in Jakarta and almost 20 years had passed since then.

Studying language in 2022 turned out to be a very different experience than what I had gone through before. The lesson was conducted via Zoom. The whiteboard, audio and video were well-supported by today's technology. It was a far cry from those days at Longman, an English course I had back in Pontianak, when listening to an English conversation from a cassette tape was a luxury that came once in a blue moon. Also gone were the days of flipping a thick dictionary. Not only we could easily google the meaning, we could also listen to the pronunciation of the word. On top of that, you could find free French lessons on Spotify, too.

Another interesting fact was how the perspective and experience of an adult helped me in learning a new language. As a kid below six, I recalled that picking up new languages was a very natural and effortless thing to do (I spoke Hakka, Teochew and Bahasa Indonesia pretty fluently). Throughout my teenage years, English was a struggle until the Beatles came along. But now, as an adult, I was surprised to discover that the approach was somehow quite methodical.

I reckon it got to do with the experience I went through in life. In my case, I did a lot of troubleshooting in IT, so I'd often observe and register the patterns of the French language. For example, I noticed that it tended to skip the pronunciation of the last letter of a word. If we used chinois and chinoise as references (the former was masculine whereas the latter was the feminine form of the word Chinese), you'd hear the letter s when pronouncing chinoise. Little things such as this did help me in learning French.

But of course as a language, French could be pretty intimidating. While most of the alphabets had the same pronunciation as Bahasa, there was no way I could figure out how to pronounce words such as quatre or cinq at a first glance. The was also no way to tell the masculine or feminine form of a noun, except by memorizing it. Those challenges aside, it had been quite fun, though. Unlike English, French seemed to be more relax in term of the structure of the sentences. You could just put a question mark at the end of what would have been a positive sentence in English and you'd be doing just fine.

So what had I learned so far?

Kembali Ke Sekolah

Jikalau dilihat kembali, saya tahu bahwa komik Asterix itu aslinya ditulis dalam bahasa Perancis. Kendati begitu, bahasa ini sangat jarang terdengar di Pontianak sehingga yang saya ingat dari sejak kecil sampai tahun 90an hanyalah comment allez-vous. Ini adalah lelucon dalam film Stephen Chow yang berjudul God of Gamblers III: Back to Shanghai. 

Wawasan tentang bahasa Perancis selanjutnya datang dari teman saya Parno. Di saat makalah bahasa Inggrisnya diuji, Parno menjawab pertanyaan dari dosennya dengan rasa percaya diri yang hanya dimiliki oleh Parno seorang: "saya tidak bisa ungkapkan dalam bahasa Inggris, tapi bisa saya jabarkan dalam bahasa Perancis." Jawabannya begitu konyol dan mencengangkan. Para mahasiswa tertawa geli dan dosen pun terkejut, tidak tahu bagaimana harus menanggapi respon tak terduga ini.

Sejak saat itu, hanya Parno yang terkadang bercakap-cakap dalam bahasa Perancis. Ketika saya dan Parno menulis lagu rap berjudul Everyday I Go To School, dia bergumam, "je ne sais pas," dengan intonasi yang datar dan lucu. Kemudian ada lagi kata favoritnya: j'adore. Begitu berkesan dan identik dengannya, sampai-sampai saya berhenti dan memotret iklan Dior ini di Paris. 

Tatkala saya pindah ke Singapura, bahasa Perancis pun mulai sering terdengar. Di dunia jual-beli saham tempat saya bekerja, ada banyak orang Perancis. Mereka ada di mana-mana, sampai suatu ketika saya akhirnya berkomentar pada teman saya Keenan saat kita sedang makan Bonchon Chicken di Boat Quay bahwa mungkin ada baiknya kita mulai belajar bahasa Perancis juga.

Ide tersebut melintas di benak saya di tahun 2019. COVID-19 datang melanda tak lama setelah itu dan perlahan-lahan lenyap sejak awal tahun ini, tapi minat saya untuk belajar tetap ada. Beberapa bulan silam, saya kebetulan bertemu dengan seorang Perancis yang merupakan keturunan Laos. Saya katakan padanya bahwa saya ingin belajar, lalu direkomendasikan olehnya untuk mencoba di Alliance Française. Segera saya daftar dan akhirnya saya kembali ke bangku sekolah. Terakhir saya ambil kursus Mandarin itu saat saya tinggal di Jakarta dan hampir 20 tahun telah berlalu semenjak itu.

Belajar bahasa di tahun 2022 adalah satu pengalaman yang sungguh berbeda dengan apa yang saya lalui sebelumnya. Kelasnya diselenggarakan lewat Zoom. Papan tulis, audio dan video pun sangat didukung oleh teknologi masa kini. Jauh berbeda dengan masa di Longman, sebuah tempat kursus di Pontianak. Saat itu, mendengarkan percakapan bahasa Inggris lewat kaset adalah sebuah peristiwa langka. Kebutuhan untuk membolak-balik kamus pun hilang sudah. Sekarang ini saya cukup mencari terjemahannya di Google. Saya bahkan bisa dengarkan cara pengucapannya! Selain itu, pelajaran gratis juga bisa dengan gampang dicari di Spotify sekarang.

Satu hal menarik yang juga saya rasakan sekarang adalah betapa sudut pandang dan pengalaman orang dewasa sangat membantu dalam belajar bahasa. Sebagai anak kecil yang berumur kurang dari enam tahun, belajar bahasa tidaklah merupakan masalah. Saya bisa berbicara Hakka, Teochew dan Bahasa Indonesia dengan lancar. Di usia remaja, bahasa Inggris terasa susah sampai saya bertemu dengan the Beatles. Sekarang, sebagai orang dewasa, saya terkejut saat menyadari bahwa cara belajar saya menjadi lebih metodik. 

Saya yakin ini ada hubungannya dengan pengalaman yang saya dapatkan dalam hidup. Dalam hal ini, saya sering memecahkan masalah IT di kantor, jadi saya cenderung mengamati pola bahasa Perancis yang saya pelajari. Sebagai contoh, bahasa ini cenderung mengabaikan bunyi huruf terakhir dalam suatu kata. Jika kita gunakan chinois dan chinoise sebagai referensi (yang pertama adalah versi maskulin sedangkan yang kedua adalah bentuk feminim dari kata Cina), anda akan mendengar huruf s saat mengucapkan chinoise. Hal-hal kecil seperti ini cukup membantu saat saya belajar bahasa Perancis.

Namun tentu saja sebagai bahasa, Perancis tergolong sulit. Meski hampir semua abjadnya memiliki lafal yang sama dengan bahasa Indonesia, saya tidak akan tahu cara baca quatre or cinq dalam pandangan pertama. Bahasa Perancis juga tidak ada struktur untuk membedakan apakah kata benda ini adalah maskulin atau feminim. Ini hanya bisa dihafalkan. Walau ada tantangan seperti yang disebutkan di atas, bahasa Perancis juga bisa dikatakan lebih santai dalam hal struktur kalimat. Anda cukup letakkan tanda tanya di ujung kalimat yang sebenarnya merupakan kalimat positif dalam bahasa Inggris dan jadilah kalimat tanya.
