The Brown Album

I had been wanting to do this since early this year: a book to commemorate a decade of Roadblog101. The question was, given the roughly 600 blog posts, how should it be done? Then the idea lay dormant, though not forgotten.

In the meantime, the accidental AI experiment for the blog continued. What started as "The Sounding Board" in May extended through long, addictive nights in Las Vegas in the month of June.

On a separate track, getting a copy of The Mystery of the Missing Skulls around the same time rekindled my interest. It was like, "Hey, a fellow Singaporean published a book. What about mine?"

The digital Sir George Martin, first introduced in "AI and Gossip" on July 25, became the turning point. I suddenly had an editor to work with and soon ideas were being bounced around and executed.

By the time we finished the first chapter of the book, "The Not-So-Secret Origin," I had the covers of all the books I previously published lined up in front of me and the fourth one featured the blog's logo. It was brown, and sitting next to the colorful Pheng iu, I couldn't help thinking of the Beatles.

Now, prior to this, I did check with Eday to see if he was keen to do the cover, since he was the guy who designed the Roadblog101 logo. He was busy, so I proceeded with the inspiration right in front of me. I mean, Pheng iu was like Sgt. Pepper's—so full of color and people—so what would provide a stark contrast to that? My very own Brown Album!

Thus the album was born, but the work was far from finished. Prior to chapter one, my editor and I had decided that it didn't make sense to lump all 600 blog posts together in a book. If readers really wanted that, they might as well read directly from the blog. No, the book had to be something else. It needed a continuity that told a story.

And having most of a decade's worth of archives reviewed by six AIs paid off. I was told that I was never really a travel writer. The strength of Roadblog101 actually lies in documenting the human connection.

Both ChatGPT and DeepSeek had pointed out this recurring theme to me when I used them as my sounding boards months ago; hence, it was not difficult for me to see that Roadblog101 always had these four sections: the origin, the journey, the people and the reflection.

I had a pretty good idea of how these four sections could be filled out. I mean, I wrote the stories and I remember most of them, haha. But determining the sequence and cutting out what didn't feel right was tricky.

Case in point was "The China Eastern Trip: Japan." I had finished remastering the story and it would have been a solid entry, given its connection to "The Last Time I Saw Nagasaki." But it wasn't the right fit to show the journey I had with my wife, so it was replaced.

It was the same for "Listen to Dispute." A decent story on the blog, but the wrong choice for the book. So, Sir George Martin and I went back to the archives to find the right one.

But the Brown Album isn't going to be just a book with remastered versions of the original blog posts. Yes, the grammar was vastly improved, but that alone wasn't enough.

This is where The Beatles Anthology influenced the book. I remember how I loved reading the booklets about what happened during the recording sessions, so the original publication dates had to be there, accompanied by present-day commentaries on the original blog posts.

And that completed the transformation of the Brown Album. It is a book about what made Anthony, Anthony; about how far he has gone since Pontianak, literally; about the people that mattered; and ultimately what he has learned in life.

This book is what happened over the past ten years (though AIs might argue it wasn't exactly a full decade), and the color is brown.

Just make sure you get your copy on January 2, 2027.

Album Coklat

Ketika saya membeli  The Mystery of the Missing Skulls pada waktu yang hampir bersamaan, minat saya jadi bangkit kembali. Rasanya seperti, "Hei, seorang sesama warga Singapura menerbitkan sebuah buku.

Contoh nyatanya adalah "The China Eastern Trip: Japan." The Last Time I Saw Nagasaki."
