The Covers

It's been more than three and a half years since I started roadblog101. Yes, on a high very level, it's safe say it's doable mainly because I love writing. If the question is what's so loveable about writing, well, I like pouring out the thoughts because it is such a stress relief. I also love reminiscing the fond memories and put them down in writing. 

Then there's the process of writing itself. The times when I tried to get it right was an inexplicable fun (funny that there's no word to describe it, haha). I just knew it when I nailed it (and it could be something as simple as choosing the words for a sentence) and I love how it felt right. One more thing, and this is just probably me, the blog has been written on a BlackBerry so far. I enjoy the typing experience that keeps me going on and, odd though it may sound, I actually like the clicking sound. The rhythm is so addictive!

Capturing the covers!

But that's like stating the obvious. Today, I'd like to share one lesser known thing that I discovered along the way. The thing with blogging is, it looks dry if it doesn't have any pictures on the blog. There should be at least one. If it was an article about travelling or food, normally I'd have a plenty of photos. But some other topics might not have a relevant picture readily available. That's when I had to come up with one. But since photography is not my forte, more often than not, the results that I like were accidentally created. Here are my all-time favourites and the stories behind the pictures.

The Plastics. 

The first one that I really liked was from a blog post called the Plastics. I knew exactly how I wanted it to look like: the big four, Visa, Master, Amex and Diners would be the foundation whereas the other three would be on top of it. The logos must be visible, but details such as card numbers and names had to be obscured. The problem was I had no idea from which angle the picture should be taken. To make it worst, I was sitting right below the lamp, so it'd always be a shadow regardless how I positioned my mobile phone. Much to my delight, the shadow on the bottom right seemed to blend in seamlessly with the curved shape design on Amex. Loved the final result and it became the cover.

Linda and Siri.

Next one is Linda and Siri. The cover was literally the two of them. One the left was the expressionless Linda (she seldom looked like that, especially for a photo taken at Ajisen Ramen, her favourite restaurant) and on the right was a screenshot of Siri's signature question. It was right on the spot, exactly what I needed for the story that told about how Siri was listening to her while I was being neglectful. Yes, it wasn't my proudest moment, but it did serve as a reminder.

Hotel K.

Of all the pictures that I developed from the scratch, the covers for book reviews were the most difficult ones. I find that there's only so much you can do with books, therefore I love the one from Hotel K the most: it showed the whole book cover, including the author's name, but yet it looked very natural. I normally used BlackBerry, but I remember vividly that the picture was taken using iPhone SE. It was a selfie (and in iPhone I trust), with the iPhone leaning on a laptop screen.

Data Travel Plan.

The one for Data Travel Plan was also one of those happy accidents. Back in the days, I had a habit of keeping the SIM cards that I bought when I travelled. For some strange or probably sentimental reasons, they always went into the plastic bag that I kept inside my passport cover. By the time I wrote the story inspired by Wiwi's question, I remember these cards and scattered them on top of my MacBook. I placed the tray ejector pin as well as my passport there. Once done, I touched it up a bit with Google Snapseed and voila, I got what I needed.

Money.

Google Snapseed is a cool mobile app for photo-editing. I used it again for the subsequent photos. The ones from Money and the Money Game made use of the filters. For the former, I happened to have foreign notes that I kept as mementos. The problem was, after being folded for so long, it wasn't easy to straighten them up, so I brightened up the background instead to mask the curvy look of the notes. As for the latter, I was simply playing with the filters on top of the blurry picture that focused only on the big amount (it was in rupiah, haha) and I liked what I saw.

The Money Game.

I also remember the one from Why You Should Travel Now. I snapped the picture from the top with one hand holding the passports on the floor to keep them as flat as possible, then I imagined how it should look like and cropped it. At the glance, the result appeared like a random stack of passports, but they were carefully laid on top of each other based on certain precision and consideration. My friend Keenan spotted this and asked, "you actually want to show off the Liverpool stamp, right?" He was right!

Why You Should Travel Now. 

Another happy accident would be the one I made for Faith, Dreams and Regrets. I was looking for pictures from my adolescence, 20s, 30s and I selected these three. When I combined them using the Layout app from Instagram and open the result on Snapseed, I noticed that the top half of the picture was rather cool. There was something with the colors of the wall and clouds that I liked. I was contemplating if I should put the words 10s, 20s and 30s on top of each picture, but then decided not to and left it that way.

Faith, Dreams and Regrets. 

Then of course there's this picture of Time magazines. The original idea was to have the picture taken from behind my shoulder and focused on the magazine I was holding, but I wasn't satisfied with the outcome. My wife suggested that perhaps we should do it as if the camera was me staring at the magazine. Still something felt missing. The Time magazine should stand out. That's when I thought of the color pop effect that I always wanted to use. I spent time reading how to do it manually using Snapseed and eventually did it. Loving it!

Time.

So what's the moral of story? Not much, except for me to indulge in the good times I had in the past, haha. I'd always wanted to write something like behind-the-scenes story of roadblog101. Blogging is a complete package of fun. Yes, writing is the main bulk of it, but the creative process of producing the right pictures for the articles could be equally enjoyable, too!

Foto-Foto Di Roadblog101

Tidak terasa sudah lebih dari tiga setengah tahun berlalu semenjak saya memulai roadblog101. Semua ini bisa terjadi karena pada dasarnya saya senang menulis. Jika pertanyaannya adalah apa yang sebenarnya menarik dari hobi menulis ini, secara singkat bisa dijabarkan seperti ini: saya suka menuangkan apa yang ada di benak saya karena lega rasanya. Selain itu saya juga suka mengenang kembali berbagai masa dalam hidup saya dan mengabadikannya dalam bentuk tulisan. 

Perlu ditekankan pula bahwa proses menulis itu menyenangkan. Ya, prosesnya. Ada suatu kepuasan tersendiri dalam menulis (dan adalah sebuah ironi bahwa kesenangan ini tidak bisa diekspresikan dengan kata-kata, haha). Ketika menulis, secara naluri saya tahu ketika saya mengerjakannya dengan benar, bahkan dalam hal-hal sederhana seperti memilih kata yang tepat dalam sebuah kalimat. Satu hal lagi yang unik, dan mungkin ini hanya terjadi pada saya, adalah artikel-artikel yang ditulis dengan BlackBerry. Saya sungguh menikmati pengalaman menulis dengan BlackBerry bukan hanya karena keyboard-nya, tapi juga karena suara irama keyboard-nya. Pokoknya ada yang terasa kurang interaksinya kalau menulis dengan Google Pixel 4 atau MacBook.

Memotret foto!

Apa yang disampaikan di atas mungkin menjelaskan kenapa saya suka menulis, tapi ada lagi satu hal menyenangkan yang mungkin jarang diketahui oleh orang banyak, yang baru saya sendiri sadari setelah mulai blogging beberapa lama. Sebuah artikel itu kurang lengkap kalau tidak disertai foto. Minimal harus ada satu. Jika yang saya kerjakan adalah topik liburan atau makanan, biasanya banyak foto yang tersedia. Namun tidak demikian halnya untuk topik-topik tertentu, jadi saya harus berkreasi menciptakan foto yang sama temanya. Karena fotografi bukanlah spesialisasi saya, terkadang hasil akhir yang saya sukai itu biasanya tercipta karena kebetulan. Berikut ini adalah cerita singkat foto-foto yang saya sukai. 

The Plastics. 

Yang pertama adalah foto dari artikel berjudul the Plastics. Saya tahu pasti apa yang saya mau: Visa, Master, Amex dan Diners berada di bawah sebagai fondasi dan tiga kartu kredit lainnya berada di atas. Logonya mesti terlihat, namun detil seperti angka dan nama harus tersamarkan. Masalahnya adalah, saya tidak tahu dari sudut mana saya harus mengambil foto. Lebih parah lagi, meja kerja saya berada tepat di bawah lampu, jadi di mana pun saya memposisikan handphone saya, akan selalu ada bayangan di hasil foto. Akan tetapi bayangannya ternyata menyatu cukup baik dengan lengkungan di desain kartu Amex. Saya suka hasil akhirnya dan kemudian saya pakai di artikel. 

Linda and Siri.

Yang berikutnya adalah Linda dan Siri. Foto yang saya pakai adalah perpaduan keduanya. Di sisi kiri ada Linda yang memandang kamera tanpa ekspresi (dia jarang terlihat seperti ini, apalagi di foto yang dijepret di Ajisen Ramen, restoran favoritnya) dan di sebelah kanan adalah Siri dengan pertanyaannya yang tepat sasaran. Cocok dengan artikel yang saya tulis tentang Siri yang mendengarkan Linda sementara saya sibuk dengan apa yang saya kerjakan. Ya, ini bukan pengalaman yang membanggakan, tapi foto ini senantiasa mengingatkan bahwa ada kalanya saya lalai sebagai orang tua.

Hotel K.

Dari banyak foto yang saya kembangkan dari berbagai ide yang terpikirkan oleh saya, yang paling sulit itu foto untuk ulasan buku. Tidak banyak kreativitas yang bisa saya hasilkan dari buku, oleh karena itu karya yang menghias artikel Hotel K ini menjadi hasil yang paling memuaskan. Foto ini menampilkan judul dan nama pengarang di sampul buku, tapi memiliki kesan alami. Biasanya saya selalu memotret dengan BlackBerry, namun pada kesempatan ini saya menggunakan iPhone SE. Ini adalah sebuah selfie (dan saya percaya dengan kualitas foto iPhone) dimana iPhone yang saya pakai disandarkan ke layar monitor laptop.

Data Travel Plan.

Selanjutnya adalah foto yang saya pakai di Data Travel Plan. Saat masih era membeli kartu SIM di negara asing yang saya kunjungi, saya memiliki kebiasaan menyimpan kartu yang saya beli. Karena alasan sentimental, kartu-kartu ini selalu saya masukkan ke kantong plastik di belakang sampul paspor saya. Tatkala saya menulis cerita yang terinspirasi oleh pertanyaan Wiwi, saya ingat dengan kartu-kartu ini dan menaburkannya di atas MacBook. Setelah dipotret, saya rapikan lagi dengan Google Snapseed dan jadilah hasil yang saya inginkan. 

Money.

Google Snapseed adalah aplikasi handphone yang praktis dan gampang digunakan untuk mengedit foto. Dua karya untuk artikel Money dan Money Game menggunakan filter dari aplikasi ini. Untuk yang foto Money, saya memiliki beberapa mata uang asing yang saya simpan untuk kenang-kenangan. Masalah dengan uang kertas yang sudah lama dilipat adalah lekukannya. Untuk mengakali hal ini, saya mengatur latar belakangnya seterang mungkin sehingga lekukan di uang kertas tidak terlihat jelas. Untuk foto kedua, saya iseng gonta-ganti filter di foto buram yang hanya fokus pada angka dua ratusan juta (ini dalam rupiah, haha) dan ternyata saya menyukai dua warna yang bertemu di tengah ini.

The Money Game.

Saya juga memiliki kenangan tersendiri dengan foto dari artikel Why You Should Travel Now. Foto ini diambil dari atas dengan satu tangan yang memegang satu sisi paspor supaya terlihat rata hasilnya. Setelah itu, saya membayangkan seperti hasilnya harus terlihat, lalu saya potong sedemikian rupa. Secara sekilas, hasilnya seperti paspor yang ditumpuk secara acak, tapi sebenarnya tiga paspor ini ditumpuk dengan pertimbangan tertentu. Teman saya Keenan menyadari hal ini dan bertanya, "engkau memang mau memamerkan cap paspor Liverpool, bukan?" Jeli juga dia, haha.

Satu lagi yang tercipta secara tidak sengaja adalah foto untuk artikel Faith, Dreams and Regrets. Saya melihat kembali foto-foto dari usia belasan, 20an, 30an dan saya memilih tiga foto berikut ini. Setelah saya gabungkan dengan aplikasi Layout dari Instagram dan membuka hasilnya di Snapseed, saya lantas menyadari bahwa bagian atas foto terlihat menarik perhatian. Saya suka warna dinding dan langit di foto-foto ini. Tadinya terlintas di benak saya untuk menuliskan angka belasan, 20an dan 30an di atas setiap foto, tapi akhirnya saya batalkan.

Faith, Dreams and Regrets. 

Dan tentu saja saya harus berbicara tentang foto dari artikel tentang majalah Time. Awalnya saya ingin agar foto ini diambil dari belakang bahu saya dan berfokus pada majalah, tapi hasilnya tidak memuaskan. Istri saya lantas mengusulkan bahwa sebaiknya sudut pandang kamera itu diubah seakan-akan saya sendiri yang sedang duduk membaca. Setelah sesi pemotretan selesai, saya rasakan masih ada yang kurang. Harusnya majalah Time terlihat lebih menonjol. Akhirnya saya mencoba efek color pop yang selalu ingin saya gunakan. Saya baca bagaimana caranya membuat efek ini secara manual dengan menggunakan Snapseed dan terciptalah foto di bawah ini.

Time.

Jadi apa sebenarnya moral dari cerita kali ini? Rasanya tidak ada dan saya hanya sekedar berbagi kegembiraan yang saya rasakan saat berkarya, haha. Sudah sejak lama saya ingin menulis tentang latar belakang foto-foto ini. Blogging itu benar-benar satu paket. Ya, memang intinya itu menulis, tapi proses kreatif dalam menciptakan foto-foto yang sesuai cerita juga cukup menyenangkan!
