The Bathroom Singer

Happiness is from within and singing is one way to express it. While I'm never a great singer, I just love singing (and it's a good thing that I'm not tone-deaf, or else I'd be a nuisance for being out of tune). I often find myself singing everywhere I go, be it the time when I left home with the last song lingering in my mind, when I was at the back seat of a motorbike (this, admittedly, was the most bizarre place to sing) and, of course, when I was showering in the bathroom. The acoustic was good, haha!

This habit began more than two decades ago, when I first discovered the Beatles. Back in the 90s, when I was in high school, I stayed in an older compound of my aunt's big house and I had a cassette player that was stationed right next to the bathroom. I would crank it up to the loudest volume just to make sure that I could hear it from behind the locked bathroom door. As it was rock and roll, it somehow moved the listener. I just had to sing and my voice sounded good (or so I thought) in the bathroom. The experience was very encouraging.

When I listened to the Beatles, my role model in singing was John. His voice was raw and honest-to-god, but most importantly, compared with Paul's, John's vocals were lower, so it was easier for me to sing along with. In those days, I could do that raucous voice suitable for rock and roll! When I started collecting the Bee Gees, I picked up Barry's falsetto (the high pitched, girlie voice) and, to certain extent, Robin's vibrato (the vibrating voice) too. The three of them were the major influences that shaped the way I sang. Actually I was also a big fan of Freddie Mercury, but his vocal range was so unbelievable that I simply gave up trying to sing like him.

Now, did I tell you that I loved Michael Jackson, too? Oh yes, he was a great singer, but what I loved the most was the way he danced. He was so ahead of his time and nobody danced like him before. Sure, Adam Levine from Maroon 5 said he got the moves like Jagger, but to me, it was definitely Michael that I'd like to imitate. His moves were what I practiced tirelessly in front of the mirror at that time. By the way, since Oasis was a cool band in the late 90s, I also did the Liam Gallagher impersonation. The less obvious influence was, perhaps, Robin Gibb's style on stage. I just liked the way he handled the microphone and the time he cupped his ear while singing I Started a Joke. I found it elegant and majestic.

I must have sung and danced so much in my spare time that the only thing left for me to do was performing live. Yes, I'd be so nervous as I waited for my turn. I'd take off my glasses so I'd see no audience when I came on stage. When I started drinking, I even got myself slightly drunk to overcome the anxiety. But when I get on stage and the music started playing, it felt electrifying that I knew I'd be alright. Standing on the stage and absorbing the good vibration from the audience was so thrilling! Most of the time, I didn't rehearse because I wouldn't be able to remember it anyway. The whole act just happened naturally.

Let me reiterate again that I am not a good singer, but I seem to recall the good times both the audience and I enjoyed. I remember the time when I performed Money (That's What I Want) with Hardy back in 1997 and again in 2014. I remember the time I performed I Saw Her Standing There in 2005. I remember the time I performed We Are the Champions and the medley of Blue Suede Shoes, Can't Buy Me Love, Stayin' Alive and Flashdance... What a Feeling during our company's Dinner and Dance. And the list went on. Looking back, they weren't bad performances for a bathroom singer, haha...

Penyanyi Kamar Mandi

Kegembiraan itu datang dari dalam hati dan bernyanyi adalah salah satu cara untuk mengekpresikannya. Saya bukanlah seorang penyanyi yang hebat, tapi saya suka bernyanyi (dan untunglah saya tidak bernyanyi dengan sumbang). Saya seringkali bersenandung sendiri di berbagai kesempatan, misalnya saat saya terngiang-ngiang dengan lagu terakhir yang saya dengar sebelum meninggalkan rumah, saat saya duduk di belakang motor yang melaju di jalan (ya, saya akui bahwa ini tempat yang aneh untuk bernyanyi) atau saat saya berada di kamar mandi. Gemanya terdengar bagus di dalam kamar mandi, hehe.

Kebiasaan ini dimulai lebih dari dua dekade yang lalu, ketika saya menemukan the Beatles. Di tahun 90an, saat saya masih SMU, saya tinggal sendiri di bagian lama rumah tante saya yang luas dan saya memiliki sebuah tip kaset yang diletakkan tepat di samping kamar mandi. Saya suka memaksimalkan volumenya sehingga saya bisa mendengarkan lagu saat mandi. Karena yang saya dengar adalah rock and roll, saya senantiasa tergerak untuk menyanyi.

Saat membawakan I Saw Her Standing There. 

Ketika saya mendengarkan the Beatles, idola saya dalam menyanyi adalah John. Suaranya yang serak terdengar jujur, tapi yang lebih penting lagi adalah, dibandingkan Paul, suara John lebih rendah sehingga mudah bagi saya untuk turut mengikutinya bernyanyi. Di masa itu, saya bahkan bisa bernyanyi dengan suara serak yang cocok untuk rock and roll! Saat saya mulai mengoleksi album Bee Gees, saya pun mencoba suara falsetto Barry (yang tinggi dan mirip suara wanita) dan suara vibrato Robin (yang bergetar). John, Barry dan Robin adalah tiga tokoh yang sangat berpengaruh dalam membentuk cara saya bernyanyi. Saya juga mengagumi Freddie Mercury sebenarnya, tapi cakupan vokalnya sangat luar biasa sehingga saya menyerah untuk mencoba bernyanyi seperti dia. 

Oh ya, saya pernah bercerita bahwa saya juga menyukai Michael Jackson, bukan? Dia adalah penyanyi yang serba bisa, tapi yang lebih mengesankan lagi bagi saya adalah caranya menari. Sebelum Michael, tidak ada artis yang menari sehebat itu. Adam Levine dari Maroon 5 mungkin saja berkata, "I've got the moves like Jagger," tapi Michael adalah sosok yang mendorong saya untuk menari. Gerakannya saya tiru dan latih di depan cermin. Sewaktu Oasis menjadi grup populer di masa SMU, saya juga mencoba gaya Liam Gallagher dalam bernyanyi. Pengaruh yang mungkin tidak banyak diketahui orang adalah aksi panggung Robin Gibb. Saya selalu menyukai gayanya dalam memegang mikropon dan saat dia menutup telinganya ketika menyanyikan I Started a Joke. Sangat elegan dan anggun gayanya.

Saat membawakan Money (That's What I Want). 

Saya menghabiskan cukup banyak waktu untuk bernyanyi dan menari di waktu senggang saya sehingga satu-satunya hal yang tersisa untuk saya lakukan adalah tampil di panggung. Ya, saya akan sangat gugup saat menunggu giliran saya. Kacamata saya pun biasanya saya lepaskan sebelum naik ke panggung supaya saya tidak bisa melihat penonton dengan jelas. Ketika saya berada di tempat yang menyuguhkan bir, saya terkadang minum sampai sedikit mabuk untuk mengurangi rasa demam panggung. Kendati begitu, saat saya naik ke pentas dan musik mulai melantun, saya menikmati suasana yang energik dan riuh sehingga saya tahu bahwa saya akan baik-baik saja. Berdiri di atas pentas dan menyaksikan respon dari penonton adalah sesuatu yang mencengangkan. Dan aksi panggung pun terjadi secara spontan. Saya biasanya tidak berlatih karena saya seringkali tidak bisa mengingat apa pun saat tampil. Adalah musik yang menggerakkan saya secara alami. 

Mari saya ulang lagi bahwa saya bukanlah penyanyi yang luar biasa, akan tetapi saya ingat saat-saat menyenangkan bagi saya dan penonton. Saya ingat saat membawakan lagu Money (That's What I Want) dengan Hardy di tahun 1997 dan sekali lagi saat Reuni 2014. Saya ingat saat membawakan I Saw Her Standing There di tahun 2005. Saya ingat saat membawakan We Are the Champions dan rangkaian lagu Blue Suede Shoes, Can't Buy Me Love, Stayin' Alive dan Flashdance... What a Feeling saat acara pesta kantor. Dan daftar pertunjukan itu masih berlanjut. Kalau saya lihat kembali, saya rasa aksi-aksi panggung itu tidaklah terlalu buruk untuk seorang penyanyi kamar mandi, haha...
